AMD + Nvidia GPU's folding at same time in same PC?

I have a spare 7950 that does nothing besides just sitting in a box, it has a weird issue but I figured I'd ask about this first.

Can I use it to fold at the same time as my 2 970s in my PC?   & Will it need a lot of PCI-E Bandwidth?  I only have 16 lanes, so I think it will be 1x 8 2x4 if I put the 7950 in.

Have another question as well, the 7950 is in a box because whilst using the card, the screen randomly black screens. (Only when using it as the main display card)  It doesn't crash anything, or effect anything game wise etc, it only makes the screen go black for a few seconds, then resumes.

I think it may be something to do with the I/O on the back or something, but I'm not sure.  (I've tried using it in different PC's, checking temps, voltages, different drivers etc.)

Do you think it'd effect the F@H performance? It doesn't seem to effect FPS or anything in games & benchmarks, but I'm unsure if it would end up failing sections of WU's.

If it does fail sections of WU, the log in F@H client will tell me right?

You should be able to fold with both.  If I am not mistaken, F@H uses all and any GPU's in your system.

I had 290, 660 and 7750 all folding in the same machine last year. it should work, although If you have nvidia as your primary GPU, hardware physx may not work in games (the handful that use hardware physx) due to the presence of an AMD card in the system.

I really couldn't care less about PhysX so it's alright, the only time I've ever noticed it looking nice was in borderlands 2.

I'll need AMD drivers installed as well right? Just want to make sure.  I've had them installed before whilst having nvidia drivers and never had an issue.

I think so. likely you would install the card, boot up into windows, windows will quickly throw its 20 year old VGA driver on and want to reboot. reboot back into windows, install amd drivers. profit.... err donate.

Yupp, as long as you have a psu that can handle the load.

Slide in the gpu, install drivers and start folding. Might have

to manually configure or re-install the folding client.

the gpu will be fine as long as it is an rear IO issue, you

should pretty easily see if it runs stable or not. Let gpu-z

or msi afterburner run in the background  and check the

"load log", otherwise if something goes critically wrong

the folding client will tell you and start over, or dump the

wu. Alternatively stop and fail the slot if it happens

repeatedly, so yeah. You will certainly know if something

goes wrong.

From what i remember folding barely uses any bandwidth,

but don't quote me on that :P. Admittedly i myself haven't

tried sli nvidia + amd gpu.  But it will probably be fine, you

know how strange computers can be. Or rather the

programming that goes behind it all :P

Alright, that was interesting.  It disabled my Nvidia driver since SLI could no longer be enabled because not enough bandwidth, but whilst doing that, it screwed my resolution & did some wonky crap to my picture quality, all artifacty and stuff.

I just finished re-enabling nvidia's driver, seems OK now.  I'll install AMD omega drivers now and see how it works.

BTW my system looks absolutely ridiculous now:

Hmmm. Actually, i do remember nvidia automatically disabling something

under certain conditions, either because of uneven amount of gpus or

the physical express slot itself, i don't remember right now and currently at

school. But yeah, yeah sli could potentially be unwilling to cooperate when

having a third gpu in the system. What motherboard do you have? probably

worth checking how the pci-e slots are routed/divided.

I don't mind not having SLI enabled, I'll be folding anyways.

I have a 4790k and nvidia requires x8, so I can't run it anyways since my CPU only has 16 lanes.

I am confused though, amd drivers are all installed and working etc, but Afterburner & GPU-Z are both displaying the 7950 as present, but I can't see their values such as temps/fan speed etc.

HWINFO is only showing me the 7950's stats.

I did figure out which one my 7950 is, so I guess I'll use HWINFO as my monitoring tool.

Well, lol. Guess you might have some issues after all then.

Try uninstalling all drivers, then install amd first and nvidia

afterwards. I would assume gpu-z will serve you well as

your monitoring tool.

just fyi. I am going on a 50 minute buss ride home in the

F@H is only showing me one 970 & the 7950 & my CPU, but HWINFO/GPU-Z/Device Manager/Afterburner is showing both GPU's.

You have to manually add a third GPU slot in the client. F@H likes to screw up from time to time and often confuses GPUs. There is a very high chance that F@H thinks that your second 970 is the 7950 and is mislabeling it, it happens to me all the time with my 580 and 750tis. Its also worth noting that the only time F@H will automatically add the correct number of slots is when you first install the program, after that all configuration changes are the users responsibility.

Aww, how do I go about doing that?

First you want to open the advanced control by right clicking on the taskbar icon and selecting "advanced control".

post-48475-0-81521400-1421771965.jpg

Then you want to click configure in top left corner.

post-48475-0-34660800-1421772129.jpg

It should open this window and you want to open the "slots" tab.

post-48475-0-44229200-1421772272.jpg

Click "add" towards the bottom right of the screen and it will open a third window.

post-48475-0-29055900-1421772469.jpg

From there you want to select "GPU" like I did in the picture and click "ok". The window should close, and after it does click "save" on the window that was behind it and it should automatically detect and add your third GPU. From there everything should be good to go. Happy folding!!  :)

If none of your monitor programs or windows for that matter  are

properly recognizing your gpu's, well then you likely have a different

problem. But if you are talking  about the folding client it is a simple

matter configuring it properly.

Everything was recognizing all 3 GPU's, but some programs were picking whether they wanted to recognize the 970s, or the 7950, never both at the same time.

For instance GPU-Z recognized all 3 GPU's, but I couldn't see any info about the 7950 besides power delivery and stuff.  HWINFO would show me everything about the 7950, but nothing about the 970s.

I'll put it back in later and see if it works though, thanks guys.

I'll put it back in later and see if it works though, thanks guys.

could you specify, or perhaps provide a screenshot of gpu-z on the 7950?

majority of the sensors will be blank as you don't even have a monitor

plugged into it. Or was it greyed out/unavailable.

Basically everything above Power Consumption was N/A or 0% or 0.

I was thinking it may be because I didn't have anything plugged into it but wasn't sure,  I took out the 7950 earlier after I couldn't get it to work. But then people posted saying it may be those other reasons.

I'll probably put it back in when my H220 mounting hardware shows up from USPS probably, since I'll be tearing apart stuff anyways.

Well, get back to us when that happens :P I was going to flip my gpu's

around and put the 970 in the top slot to see what happens, but it's abit

late. Yeah, your 7950 probably wasn't properly recognized..

Btw, as a response to your system looking ridiculous, you should see

mine :P Thought i uploaded pictures to my album.. guess i'm just

too dammn lazy, here it is.

That fan header you see is going to the noctua fan plastered onto my

side panel, i'd say you still got a very stylish pc.

As I have mentioned previously, AMD and NVidia can "play" together, but not always, mileage will vary. When adding GPU's, easiest thing is to uninstall and re-install FAH to pick up all the changes. Don't be to concerned about what monitoring programs tell you, they can also get a bit whacked when you have two different vendor devices. As long as FAH seems to be working away on the cards you want it to, you are Golden. :)

I have seen people claiming there are more problems with using

nvidia as display card and amd as secondary(forgot to say compared to the other way around),

no personal experience with that though..
