Upgrade from G550JK to Alienware 15?

xXButchXx

Hey guys,

So in the summer I purchased my Asus ROG G550JK laptop and threw a 500gb SSD in it instead of its 7200rpm drive. It's been working fairly well with the gaming tasks that I have used it for so far, but I just saw that the new Alienware 15 just came out, and it looks stunning. Do you guys think it'd be a worthy upgrade to sell my G550jk and pick up and Alienware 15?

Thanks!  :)

As soon as you said Alienware I freaked out and turned off. Now that I'm back don't upgrade there is no need and even if you do upgrade to something from Asus, Republic of gamers and not this... this...

nope, if anything i would wait and see if companies to revisions after more broadwell chips are released

and if you do go new, not the ailenware because it wont be much better and since you have a desktop why do you need the graphics amplifier

I figured there would be some answers like this, they're not as over priced as it used to be  :P and I thought that the gtx 965m or 970m would be a worthy upgrade from the gtx 850m in my current G550jk

For anyone wondering...

My G550JK specs:

i7 4700HQ

GTX 850m

500GB SSD
8GB RAM

1920x1080

The Alienware 15 specs I was considering:

i7 4710HQ

GTX 970m

128GB SSD + 1TB HDD

8GB RAM

1920x1080

Hmm, you know, I think the Alienware 15 specs are pretty good for an upgrade. As long as you recognize that you're educated and know what you're getting for the price instead of being a fanboy, there's nothing wrong with an Alienware.

You might want to carry over that 500GB SSD from the G550JK. That's something you can't give up.

No I'm not trying to be a fanboy, I just think that the specs are pretty decent and I like the build quality of the Alienwares, especially these new ones... I was thinking that if I were to sell my G550JK that the 500GB SSD would improve it's value and I could get a bit more money out of it, considering that the Alienware already has an SSD.

I know you're not a fanboy, and that's good. It means that you actually know what you're getting for your dollar instead of going with a blind trend.

The 500GB SSD is really something that you couldn't sell even if you wanted to. What I'd personally do is take the 128GB SSD from the Alienware and toss it into the G550JK before selling.

Hmmm, I could do that, or I could buy an Alienware at a cheaper price with only a 1TB drive and no SSD pre configured, throw the original drive back into the G550JK, and then use the 500GB SSD in the Alienware...

That's actually a great idea. If the 15 is offered with an HDD only you could totes do that.

It is, so if I decide it's a worthy upgrade buy it that way  :)

Hi Butch, did you get the alienware 15 in the end? I've been thinking of getting the same one myself. How is it if so?

I didn't end up getting it, have been pretty caught up in school lately and have barely had much time to do some gaming, so I've stuck with my trusty G550Jk for now and it's been doing me well... But I heard many good things about the Alienware 15...
