recommend a Tablet for me

zheavy

Hello all and happy new year :)

So I've always been a PC gamer and recently i'm starting to get curious about mobile gaming. Now i have a low end crap phone so i can't game on that, and i've wanted to get a tablet for awhile. I tried doing some research but i'm not sure what to look for as i'm clueless about this market. Everything kept leading me to the apple Ipad Air 2 to be the best one out there. Now honestly I haven't set a budget yet, but that one would cost at 500$+ at wifi only and 16gb capacity.

Now i don't think i'll need a 4g one since internet is expensive here anw, so i'll stick to wifi, but i don't know about capacity. Will i need the storage space for gaming only? what should i be looking for? are there any recommended guides[or a specific tablet] u can point me too?

Nvidia Shield Tablet perhaps? Play your Android games + stream from your (nvidia) GPU. If you have a Playstation 4 you could also look at the Sony Xperia Tablets as they allow you to steam your PS4 to your tablet.

The ipad is rubbish for the price.

If you want a 10" tablet, the best bang for the buck choice by A COUNTRY MILE is the asus t100a. It comes with a detachable keyboard, it sports an x86 quad core 64-bit atom cpu that utterly destroys most arm cpus on the market if not all of them on both computation and graphics (save the tegra k1's kepler gpu) and is 300 bucks. That thing will run bf3, in fact it will run most of your steam library since it's loaded with windows. The only downside of it is the resolution. However, the pixel density is still very high and comparable to a 28" 4k display.

Fpr 7" the shield tablet is certainly a great option, especially for gaming.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Shield tablet.

Can even play your own steam library if you have 5ghz bands.

Of course it'll be able to handle any android game currently available like a champ.

Thank you everyone for your posts and recommendations.

The asus recommendation isn't valid for me as there is no ASUS retail here unfortunately.

I'm going to check for the shield if it's available, if not i'll have to order it from abroad which will take months and extra shipping costs, so i'll end up paying above 500$++ but w.e. I'm left without any other choices it seems. It's unfortunate for me that i have an AMD gpu though, so i won't be utilizing the steam game stream anytime soon...

Stay away from iOS imo, too closed for anything good to happen.

Care to elaborate? I've heard much contradicting arguments regarding apple products all my life and most recently ios, but nothing actually that was validated by facts and arguments. Sorry i know this is a bit off topic, but a general idea would be nice simply reinforce my knowledge around this matter.

2 more questions:

-Are there any benefits to 4G LTE version besides GSM and the 4G internet? if not, i prefer saving the money and getting wifi.

-strictly gaming, will 16GB be enough?

Nvidia SHIELD Tablet is your only option for gaming. Stay away from iOS imo, too closed for anything good to happen.

Have you seen iOS games? Apple's new Metal API is basically DX12 for mobile; the newer devices can achieve ridiculous amounts of detail at 60FPS.

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN'T MOD iOS DOESN'T MAKE IT AN INFERIOR PLATFORM.

The iPad Mini with Retina price is actually pretty damn great right now. I recently bought a 32gb Wifi for $400 CAD.

There are plenty of great games that you can play on the iPad. Like XCOM, FTL, Kingdom Rush, Phoenix Wright, GBA Emulators, Hearthstone, Bastion, Papers Please, Minecraft, Terraria, and the list just goes on and on. Also, the iPad mini 2s battery, build quality, and performance is top class.

As for your question, 16gb could be enough for some games, but wouldn't you rather get 32gb or higher incase you wanted to download some podcasts or videos to watch offline? If you are strictly gaming, then 16gb should be enough.

thank you for the i[ad suggestion.

As for capacity, just what i wanted to know. I have crap internet, so no videos. 16gb will do for me.

anyway, i did a little digging on pricing around here:

nvidia shield tablet 32GB4g lte           700$ [completely overpriced imo]

ipad air 2     16GB wifi                        500$

ipad mini     16GB wifi                        300$

ipad mini 3  16GB wifi                        450$

i'm aware these prices are quite high but this is whats available here, whats the best "value" among those?

The iPad Mini 3 is stupid imo. Same spec but $100 for the touch ID which is useless for me. The iPad Air 2 is probably the most powerful tablet out there with amazing screen. The first iPad Mini is weak sauce with crappy non-retina screen so its not worth the price at all.

The best value in iPads right now is the iPad Mini 2 with the retina display 32gb for $350 US. I know that you don't need 32gb, but what harm can be done for having more storage, plus, its only $50 more.

Air 2 is stupid powerful for any ios game out there, but you won't see a massive improvement in term of pure gaming performance on current stuff, although there are many great looking games coming which might need the power.

Best value is still the Mini 2, then the Air 2 is ok as well. the Mini 3 however is ridiculous, don't get that one.

Mind you that you will have about 11gb of actual storage on the 16 version, and large games like XCOM, Wolf Among Us, Walking dead are all about 1.5gb each. So take that into consideration.

64gb ipad air 2 - only if you jailbreak right after purchase like I do. I like the ios ecosystem, and cydia tweaks when JB. Otherwise nvidia shield if your best choice, you can map pretty much any touch games to your controller.

I would only buy an Android tablet (same goes for phones) after making sure that XDA cares about that specific piece of tech.

Also, touch controls are terrible and the games on Android or IOS generally aren't near as good as those on the 3DS.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.
