the LoL world championships could be a huge prize pool, but I think because riot spends so much money advertising + producing the event they don't want to make the prize pool much bigger.

(I'm sure they could make it like 10 million still though)

It's like $400 or $800 per weekend they get to play, cant remember which number it is though.

Robertoxlee talked about it on his stream after he left complexity a few months ago.

Wouldn't it be so sad if Dota 2's Asian Championship sold enough shit to raise it's prizepool above Smite's?

It went from the base at $ 250.000 to $2.05 million in 17 days and there's still 21 days to go.

If that''ll be the case, must be kinda of a bummer.

That's cool...but the way they're funding it makes me sort of sick.  Encouraging people to spend money on in-game items in the store to raise the prize money.  I like how Valve handled it better, Compendium and Compendium points all gave 25% to the prize-pool.

Too bad for Smite that the glory was short-lived. Dota 2's DAC tournament pushed it down from the top 3 with a bit over $3 millions.

Just shows how incredibly selfish RIOT is. They make the most money and yet their prizes pools are the lowest...

Now if only dota wasn't also the top 3 eh? xD

Only time one of these kinds of headlines will honestly suprise me is if it passes the $11 million that Dota 2 raised for ti4.

"It's speculated that Lee's currently making around $98,000 - $147,000 a year from playing LoL. Those figures don't account for prize money and revenue paid from streaming services. One person in the know said that one company offered a $490,000 transfer fee for the player along with an annual salary of $196,000."

They may not have big prize pools, but they pay the players a "salary" and most if not all of their living expenses are covered living in the team houses and such.

They also do more for the competitive community & advertise & spend tons of money on videos, venues and stuff.

They probably spend 3-5x more money on their publicity for these events than any other company in charge of e-sport venue marketing.

Let League players purchase in game items to contribute to the prize pool like Dota 2 did and there would be some serious competition.

Dota 2 is still rockin' the biggest prize pool! That's because LoRd GabeN is willing to spend money on his fans unlike the greedy execs at Riot!

Not exactly, Valve's base prize pool is $1,600,000, while Riot's is $2,000,000. You also have to thank all the russians who mistook the compendium for vodka players who contributed to support it.

It does take a lot of money to try to convince people that your poorly balanced and over-centralized game is competitive.

I have yet to see any game that doesn't have things that are considered op and things that aren't, and if you don't suck at league you can play just about anything and do well

Riot Saves money in the price pool but spends more money for the fans. I mean they bought imagine dragons to do a song for them. I think they aren't that cheap.

You mean they spend more money on marketing and turning their e-sport scene wheel.

They're pouring a lot of money into the other tournaments apart from the biggest one, which is part of the reason they're not just blowing it up.

Infact, it was and is the fastest growing prize pool for an esports tournament in history, shooting up to second place for largest prize pool in only 24 hours. There's a thread in the tech news section that talks about it.
