[Tutorial] How to make your 900 Series Video Card have a 0% fan mode!

Lays

Ok Why would you do this

Wouldent having your fan off (0%) Damage the card

i have all my fans Running at 25% idle and on load 60% never had any temps above 60c (on eather my 660 or my new 980 GTX) (allthough i did repleace all the thermal paste with "IC Diamond 24-Carat Thermal Compound"

Dont have a Decable Moniter to find out how much nosie this gens with the rest of my system but i cant hear it when im gaming with my Krakan Headset (love Razer)

No it won't damage the card, as I set up a fan curve. If the card goes above 60c,the fans will turn on.

But Still There could damage the card if the Thermal Sonsors are damaged (happend to be on a shitty ATI 7600 Card )

Hey @Lays, I have this what I believe to be a problem with my G1 970, if I go into MSI Afterburner and tick the "Unlock voltage control" box, it of course lets me control the card's voltage, but I have found that my card crashes constantly in BF4 with that option ticked, when I untick the box, it seems to be perfectly stable. Can you confirm this and see if it's not just my card? If you have time of course, and thanks. I'm going to try this tut out.

am I the only one just thinking about putting a physical regulator for regulating fan speed (for putting a limit to the fan speed not to have a fix fan speed)

I have 2 980's, one with a reference cooler and the other with Galax's third party cooler and at 52% they are extremely quiet......

Well lucky you. That's just not the case with most people. My GPU is the loudest thing in my case even at the lowest fan speed (~30%) so a fix like this is perfect for me.

What about warranty? Do i just add the original values to the BIOS again if i have to send it in for RMA?

EDIT: Oh and nice informative tutorial! :D

@Butterfish if you leave the modded BIOS on the card when you RMA, if they open up nvidia inspector it'll say the BIOS name, and "MODIFIED" next to it.  I believe if you restore the original, it won't say that.

But it's still a maybe. Then again, you have to do it at your own risk i guess :P

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial. Now my Gigabyte 970 runs at 0dB mode too and temps are still amazing ~35C. There is definitely less noise now, as the only sound source are case fans, which are barely audible. ;)

0 DB mode working on the Gigabyte GV 970. Mine gets a little hotter at idle because I have a semi-passive build, but now my computer is ultra silent! Right now after a long idle period I am at 66C.

I was uncomfortable at first messing with NVFlash, but it was easy. Thanks for the tutorial!

It's working on my 970 g1 gaming. However, I find it annoying when the fans randomly come on for a second and go off. Ah well, still waay more silent.

@christianled59

In afterburner adjust the temperature hysteresis. Settings>Fan.

Also useful in dealing with the coil whine that often accompanies a fan sitting in its almost-enough-power-to-turn stage.

So, I'm not sure if this is related but since I've done this mod, my pc will randomly reset (not bsod) while folding.

Hmmm.. You used the original BIOS like I said in the tutorial right?  If so, I don't think it'd be an issue, as you're not changing anything besides fan speed.

Try this, when folding set the fan to like %60 and see if it still resets, it may be that your fan profile makes the card run to it's limit and the PC shuts off to prevent thermal damage.

Did you back up your original ROM? if so, try flashing that back and see if it still does the restart thing.

I used the original bios. I only checked temperatures for the first 10 min but it's very possible the temp went up while I was away. (I don't think it reset until several hours in) I increased the fanspeed to go up at a lower temp and so far it hasn't reset. I'll leave it over night and if it resets again, I'll reflash the original bios and see if that fixes anything. @Lays

Btw, thanks for responding.
