[Tutorial] How to make your 900 Series Video Card have a 0% fan mode!

Lays

As long as he sets up a custom fan curve with the fans spinning up to ~35% at some point in the curve it'll be aight.

Actually I made the fan starting spinning at 30% once the temp hits 50c, which only happens when gaming, not having issues this far btw

Yeah I have mine set up so it'll start spinning at 60c @ 35%, it turns on once every like.. 1-2 hours for 5 seconds to cool it off, then turns off again lol

A bunch of naysayers were on OCN telling me I couldn't do this, it didn't work until I changed a few other things other than the min. %, then it worked.

Then they proceeded to tell me it would mess with my fan's control ability which hasn't been an issue whatsoever either lol.

Since it worked on that other guy's PNY card, I'm hoping I can find someone with a different type of card to see if it works as well.  So far I've only seen people do it with G1/ windforce cards and that PNY one.

Well there's one difference between kepler & maxwell bios tweaker, you can change the RPM value. Could you try eg 10% 2000 rpm and try changing it to 4000 rpm and see if the fans are actually changing? That RPM value might be just a report thing.

Would you share your custom fan curve with us?

Here ya go, I've been slowly changing it to see what the best setup is for passively cooling in 90% of games + desktop, it appears that ~66c is around the magic number if I use V-Sync in the game, but I'm still fine tuning.

My new case shows up later today, so I'll do more experimenting then. (Air 540)

Thanks. I have mine spinning up at 60° and have a hysteresis of 15° so the fans only stop once the card cools down to ~45°. That prevents a "stop-and-go" state when hovering around 60° - which usually happens with fans on during gameplay. Additionally the card cools down a little faster after it was under load.

At idle (browsing, youtube, ...) the temperature is around 35° - 40°

The card currently sits in a Carbide 500R with meshed sidepanel. I will, however, mod the panel and replace the mesh with acrylic glass soon. Will see how that affects temperatures.

Machines take me by surprise with great frequency

Thanks for the tutorial! I'm building a silent PC and really love the backplate and overall design of the G1 970, but the Strix has the 0rpm at idle that I really want. Now that I know it's possible with the G1 i'm pretty sure that'll be my choice. Only thing i'm still concerned about is it's length. I know it'll fit in my case (define r5) just fine, but i'm worried I'll find it regrettably long from an appearance standpoint. Also the G1 has dualBIOS right? So if I did this and it for some reason bricked the BIOS, I should be able to switch over to the other and be ay okay?

No the g1 doesn't have dual bios, I've already messed with the fan like 15 times & reflashed the bios just as many times so far, you'll be OK. It's super easy.

Yeah I'm not worried about the process, your tutorial laid it out nicely! Last question, is setting the fan curve in Afterburner a required step? Since it's all set in the bios it should work just fine without, no?

I don't think it works without afterburner, i tried messing around with it and everytime I needed to make a fan curve, or turn the fan to 0% manually in afterburner.

I think it'll work with any software though, but so far I've only used Afterburner because I like it the most out of any "OC software"

Why would I want to turn off my GPU fan...?

At idle and light loads to reduce pc noise.

I tried to notice it but can't. If I put my ear next to it I hear something less noisy than a whisper, eh.
