[Tutorial] How to make your 900 Series Video Card have a 0% fan mode!

Lays

Hello, I recently figured out how to change the minimum fan speed on my Gigabyte 970 G1, and figured I'd share how I did it with you all.

Do this at your own risk, I'm not responsible for any damages that occur.

DO NOT TURN YOUR PC OFF DURING THE FLASHING PROCESS UNLESS YOU WANT A $330-$700 PAPERWEIGHT.

REMEMBER TO DISABLE YOUR VIDEO CARD DISPLAY DRIVER AS I MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO BEFORE FLASHING THE ROM

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WORKS ON OTHER CARDS OTHER THAN 9XX SERIES, YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND OUT YOURSELF

It's at the top of the page..

Your only saying don't turn off your system, just something as simple as changing a fan curve is not going to work with all cards, even if the steps are followed, which "might" leave users with multi gpu configs with paperweights.

It probably won't, since this is controlled by your software once you get into windows.

So loading into windows it probably won't fix it until you're physically loaded into windows (Or atleast to the login screen)

Just keep in mind that this doesn't work on every GPU.

In theory it should, as you're essentially over-riding the minimum speeds and getting rid of all the minimum limits.

Unless there's some type of controller built into the card that isn't effected by the bios, it should work.

Worked perfectly on my PNY 970 XLR8, it was ridiculously loud on IDLE at minimum fan speed (22%), now it doesn't IDLE above 50c with  GPU fan at 0% and chassis fans at minimum speed using a fan controller panel

Thanks  ;)

Glad I sorta helped  :D

I didn't have the patience to wait for someone to confirm it for me so ....

I guess it should also work with the Gainward and Palit blowers since they use the same PCB as PNY

It should work, just wouldn't recommend doing it on a blower style cooled card.

As long as he sets up a custom fan curve with the fans spinning up to ~35% at some point in the curve it'll be aight.

Ummmm sorry for asking, but why do the BIOS flashing if you could just use the custom fan curve in MSI AB?

Because every 970 except the strix/EVGA (to my knowledge) have a minimum fan speed that AB / any other software has to abide by, flashing the bios removes that minimum value, so you can turn the fans off.

The strix doesn't have a minimum fan limit, as it's advertised for having the zero fan mode.

Hm. That's odd. Every card except the reference design ones that i had in the past allowed me to do what i wanted. I had a MSI 770, a Gigabyte 3x r9 280X and now the strix.

Anyways, nice guide. ;)

who cares...

Which I tried with kepler bios tweaker on many GPU's but it never allowed me to turn the fan off even when you had it set to 0% with a custom fan profile. I've asked people to try manually modding the bios and they were telling me the bios doesn't allow it.

A bunch of naysayers were on OCN telling me I couldn't do this, it didn't work until I changed a few other things other than the min. %, then it worked.

Then they proceeded to tell me it would mess with my fan's control ability which hasn't been an issue whatsoever either lol.

Since it worked on that other guy's PNY card, I'm hoping I can find someone with a different type of card to see if it works as well.  So far I've only seen people do it with G1/ windforce cards and that PNY one.
