Confusion with PSU for new system

xeus_dragon

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum but is not new to building PC. I used to build PC but have been disconnected from doing so since 2011. I have finally decided to build a new PC for myself with the following config:

Processor: i7 4790K

Motherboard: Gigabyte gaming 5 (ATX)

RAM: Ripjaw X 1866 16gb (2x8)

Graphics: Gigabyte gaming g1 gtx 970

Cooler: H105

Storage: 128gb A-DATA XPG SX900

               Seagate barracude 1tb

Case: NZXT Phantom 410

I plan on overclocking the processor and graphics card. I am confused whether I should get a 750W or 850W PSU. I plan on getting a bronze certified since I won't be keeping it on 24/7. Which wattage should I get?

Thanks in advance :)

I think you'll be fine with even 600W.

750 easily. If you were going SLI, 850 will provide more leg room.

Thanks for your quick replies :) If 750W is going to work, it would be great since I can get 80 gold (CS series) at an affordable price. I don't plan on doing sli since I can't afford any monitor over 1080p. 1440p is just too expensive.

750 watts will be perfect for a single card and overclocking :)

This belongs in the Cases and Power Supplies section. I'm moving the thread.

Please post in the correct sub-forum in the future.

850w is overkill. 750w is already more than enough for sli and overkill for a single card.

A single 970 easily runs off of a decent 500w.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

why not a 240/256gb ssd some are only about $100?

I plan on running ssd just as a boot drive and 1tb for rest of the stuffs. I initially planned on getting a 256gb ssd and no mass storage but didn't seem like a good plan so went with the 128gb + 1tb hybrid option.

Awesome. Thanks :D

I am sorry for posting it in the wrong forum. :( I was not aware of that specific sub-forum.

Where are you buying from? And what's your budget? There may be better options than the Corsair CSM you can get. Like the Rosewill Capstone 750-M or the EVGA Supernova 750w G2 for instance.

I will be buying it from any Canadian retailer/online store.

The CS750M is $129.99 CAD correct? http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cs750m

The EVGA G2 would be a better build PSU: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr

Or the EVGA B2: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-110b20750vr

CS750M is going to be $80 on sale for boxing day. I think I will find EVGA too. Do you think EVGAs are going to be better than CS?

Both of the units I had listed are build better than the Corsair CS750M especially the G2. Since the EVGA Supernova 750w B2 is $84.99 right now with a $20 rebate to effectively make it a $64.99 PSU, I would go with that over the CS750M.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I will definitely look into it.
