Far Cry 4 - Get Now or Wait?

BiG StroOnZ

Been meaning to play this game because right now I don't have any single player games to play. Always like to keep one single player game going at all times. However, upon released I noticed many people complaining about various issues with the game. Most notably the stuttering problem it suffers from.

I want to play it, and can get it for $30 however, I really don't want to sit through a whole stutter fest. The stuttering was said to occur frequently when you are driving and you do a lot of that in this game if it is anything like Far Cry 3. I saw there were a few modifications you could make to it to reduce stutter but it lowers image quality and I'm not about to do that.

Has the recent patches it has had fixed any of the issues like stuttering? How is NVIDIA's newest beta driver 347.09 does it improve performance at all? Should I expect good performance with a 780 or is it still a few patches and drivers away from that?

I really want to get the game and I can get it for cheap but I just want to hear some other peoples' opinions on whether or not it is playable and can offer a good experience. Or whether or not I should hold out a little longer because it's just not quite there yet.

Stutter wasn't too bad even at launch with bitmaps disabled. At $30 I would say yes.

It runs ok, but it's not perfectly optimized like say... BF4.

I can play high (remember there's low, medium, high, very high, and ultra) 1080p 45+ fps with an R9 270, so you should be fine with a 780.

There was still stuttering last time I checked while driving and it's incredibly annoying, not sure if they've fixed it recently or not.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

"If it is anything like FC 3"

It is the same thing, just with a little bit mor fancy graphics and in a different setting. I personally wouldn't recommend buying it at this stage, don't know if it's worth it at 30$, but I for one have stopped buying Ubisoft products at release or above 15$... Maybe really should just stop buying alltogether.

my 7950 runs the game beautifully. runs the game on high settings, it runs butter smooth. picked up a 7970 so i can run it on ultra with no fps compromise, but atleast on AMD it runs perfect, and looks really good. highly recommend

if you've played farcry3 there's not much different, same gameplay really so I'll wait for a few months till it's around 10$

I doubt they will ever fix it. FC3 still stutters, just to a lesser extent. It ruined my experience in FC3, i'm not gonna make the same mistake twice. It's a shame though, the game itself seems to be nice.

it runs fine on my setup, stutters once every great while, not even every gaming session...  I don't have any tricks or special patches that someone figured out somewhere either.  just bought it on steam and only have the official ubisoft released patches...  same for a friend of mine who runs it on a Sandybridge i5 at 4.4 and an EVGA SC 970, except he got it as his free game with his 970 and installed it through uplay.

Saw a screenshot of it with bitmaps disabled and the before and after is pretty bad. Is this a requirement to get it to run smoothly?

If it runs ok I can deal with that, the stuttering though however will probably make me annoyed as you stated.

Are you saying you wouldn't recommend on getting it because of your personal experience or from what you seen or heard?

So you experienced no stuttering at all on your setup? Is that just an AMD specific experience or are there people with AMD cards that do experience stuttering just you aren't one of them?

I really enjoyed the gameplay a lot in Far Cry 3, so even if it's more of the same that doesn't really bother me. So you are saying $30 is still too much for it?

I had absolutely no issues with Far Cry 3, that game ran wonderfully for me. Watched about 5 mins of that video, didn't seem to notice any terribly consistent stuttering though which is my main concern.

Stuttering every once in a while doesn't bother me. However last time I watched some gameplay videos was of TotalBiscuit and the stuttering was almost every minute. If it has changed since then then I have no problem picking it up. Problem here is the general consensus as far as the Poll goes says not to get it. Why do you think that is (just people hating on Ubisoft) or actual people who have it who think it is problematic to play.

I never won anything, but I'll give it a shot  ;)

ubisoft hate is quite popular these days...  I will say when I just started playing it (played it on day 2 after release), it did stutter a bunch.  enough to be annoying...  I'm not gonna say you won't have any issues for sure, but mine runs fine like I said above.  Your setup is pretty similar to mine, I'd guess you should be able to run it just fine.

going from memory, my graphics setup is all maxed out except god rays and tree thingy off, AA on SMAA, high for shadows (I think high looks cooler than soft shadows, and yes I know its less realistic), AO on SMAO I think
