It doesn't make a difference. In my server, they're oriented side ways.

Does it matter what way I have my mechanical hard drive oriented? Right now I have the side with the WD label on facing up, and the side showing some of the parts on the bottom. This may be really dumb I just wasn't sure if it made a difference at all...

Nope, orientation doesn't matter. Unless you live in a 2G or more environment, the read head should manage just fine while the disk is spinning.

EDIT:

Now I actually want to know what happens to a HDD on 0G, or 2G, or maybe even 9G.

Cool thanks. Sometimes I just over think things, I have some pretty over kill OCD when it comes to parts in my PC.

It used to be an issue with much older hdds but modern hdds have no issue with any orientation as long as they don't move around during operation.

9G would be something that a jet pilot goes through in a tight maneuver.

Oh alright...we'll I'm not planning to take my desktop PC with a custom water cooling loop in it into an air craft performing special maneuvers anytime soon, so I think I'll be ok :)

0G (g-force) isn't actually 0 gravity but a measure of acceleration. That's why someone can experience 0G's while orbiting Earth while gravity is still affecting them.
