Windows 8.1 ISO.

Ripull

Have a question stirred by this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NT0KFR09Svc

Linus says you only need a 4 GB USB to download the ISO file, but Windows 8.1 64 bit is like 20GB in size when installed. Is this right? What's up with this? Is this referred to ISO file just an upgrade from Windows 8 or is it the full install for 8.1?

the windows 8.1 ISO is getting bigger with every version

8GB is the minimum

but when installed, it is normal that the OS take up 20-30GB fresh installed

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

The Windows 8.1 with update ISO unpacked sits around 3.83 GiB. Now then, if your USB can hold a capacity of 3.84 GiB or larger, you are golden for a USB Boot disk.

I went out an bought a 8GB one today.

The only thing I'm wondering now is if I download the ISO from the microsoft website where it requires you to give a product key to begin the installation, will I need to input the product key again on the PC that I am installing the OS onto?

I tried putting the 8.1 ISO on a 4gb drive and nope. You need more than 4GB

Your profile picture makes me cringe.

I can upload it to mega if you would like? It is a clean ISO, so there shouldn't be any worries. If it is against the ToS of the forums, Let me know and I'll take it down ASAP.

Microsoft's tool is the best way to go about it. You need to punch in your serial into the tool to validate that you're in fact a legitimate owner of a Windows license. Once you install Windows you'll be prompted to enter it again. Unlike Windows 7 serial key validation cannot be skipped on Windows 8 installs. You can use MSDN keys for the Windows install process. Tho you will be required to use your valid key to activate Windows.

I think it would classify as piracy due to Microsoft requiring valid Windows keys to even download the ISO. As to where Windows 7 ISO's were just pushed out to the open public.
