What to get?

TheGosuStandard

I have free time now and around $400-$600 to spend on a new GPU, would you guys say it's better to go with a 970 w/ a 2nd (or 3rd if I keep my 16:9) monitor or with one 980?

I doubt SLI 980's are an option where as 970's are more realistic.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I mainly play games that aren't that graphically intense (unless BF4 comes into play) on a 144hz monitor.

for 1080p get a single GTX970 and call it a day as this maxes out most games and render them at very good framerates...consider adding a second one for SLI next year Maybe...

EDIT: just seen your edit...if you want 120 to 144 FPS a single GTX970 CAN provide that in most games with some settings tweaks from time to time (lesser Anti-aliasing for example)

realy it depends on what you want to play and at what resolution.

i have a gtx 980 and i play games at 4k butter smooth.

but if your only planning on 1080p then go with the 970.

this will help if you want to add more gpu's in the future https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwiuD1WtnNs

hummm...no...the GTX980 is a very bad value as it performs only slightly better than a 970 but cost significantly more.

You pay a hell of a premium for an extra 10 to 12% performance increase.

Would anyone know if there are any 970's that have a gunmetal/red color scheme?

Also if I plan to go with the RoG swift 1440p eventually, is the 970 sli still optimal?

the ASUS STRIX and MSI Gaming cards are the one to look for those color scheme...most likely the Strix it's an excellent card as well...very quiet.

Yes 970SLI is VERY good choice for 1440p...R9 290X crossfire or R9 295X2 cards would give slightly more performance but you'd have to deal with a shit ton of heat and a 1000W PSU...i won't recommend you go down that path.

This is what the strix looks like:

That's good to know, I wish I could take their striker cooler & place it on that. Might have to scout the strix out.
