Windows 7 or 8 for 2015?

IsaiahKitaeff

Hey everyone,

I will be building a new computer in a few days, and wanted to know what you all think in terms of the OS? I have a full copy of Win7 and Win8, but have never really experienced 8 yet, does anyone recommend switching?

What are your opinions on 7 vs. 8 in general, and which do you use? Or maybe something a bit more exotic?

(Build will be mainly for gaming/university; GTX970, i5 4690k, etc.)

Let's discuss.

windows 8. because better performance in games, direct x12, faster boot times and file transfers, and longer support.

I very much dislike Windows 8. While there are many fixes for the gripes that I have, I can not justify the price of the upgrade if I have to fix multiple issues, for minuscule profit.

In terms of my flat-out preference for an OS, OS X Mountain Lion is my personal choice.

I personally really like 8 once you change the file associations so you don't end up in a metro app. It's faster than 7 and who fucking cares about the taskbar that's a terrible argument. Driver management and downloads seem a lot easier, file transfers are faster, and whatever.

Are there any lingering serious incompatibility issues with Win8? (Such as general programs that people might need to use) I can get over the new UI/skin, but have a concern for general purpose issues.

I've been running win8 for about 6 months and I have experienced no incompatibility issues yet.  I also hear that upgrading to windows 10 from windows 8 will either be free or discounted.

Win8. You won't run into any issues for general purpose use and compatibility isn't a problem. It's very similar to win7 under the hood, plus boot times are WAAAAYY faster.

Windows 7 loses mainstream support in 2015, then gets the plug pulled in 2020 much like XP did earlier this year.

Though for a possible free Windows 10 upgrade when it comes out Windows 8(.1) is the better choice. While I think the UI only could use some tweaks that makes it more like LG's UI that debuted with the LG G3 might make Windows 8.1 a more tasteful OS.

Windows 8.1 kernel is all around superior than Windows 7. With that in mind aside driver maturity gaming is in general better on it along with software.

I'd go for Windows 8 since it's faster and supports Directx 12, and support for Windows 7 will be ending soon.

I ABSOLUTELY love win 8, boot time so quick. No difference between win 8 or win 7 after you install classic start, get it from Ninite.com .

You guys make some good points for Win8; any recommendations on particular programs to look into for the interface or anything else in general? Also, anyone using Rainmeter with 8?

WIndows 8 is alot better than windows 7, you just need to change all the default apps, since the metro apps(I tried to use them) just aren't very intuitive. And the start screen/start menu argument is stupid, anyone who uses that as an argument to defend windows 7 is an idiot.

Windows 8 if your peripherals all work without issue. This is why I left it on my desktop. My mouse had issues with sleep (Logitech M500 with/without SetPoint software) and my USB-Wifi dongle has issues with it too. But I would've used it if I could. Task Manager is great and boot times and use speed is faster than 7.

I'm personally going with Windows 8.1 for my new rig I'm making in a few days. Mainly because I'm hoping Windows 8.1 users will get a big discount on Windows 10 when it's released. :P

I'm happy with 7 no reason to switch plus I use wmc on a daily basis and in too lazy to see if wmc wake-record/sleep power management works corectly on 8.1 I'm hoping it does wmc and my 2 xbox 360 saves me $500 a yr on 2 dvr service fees and stop rental fees.

The idea isn't too bad now in 8.1 I mean I like the translucency in aero but my issue with aero is that it's got a shiny effect I like the flatter approach of Windows 8 but I don't like that all I can do on the start screen is move stuff around, add stuff, remove stuff, change the tile size. Like I said LG should really design Windows to sort of be like their UI that's on the LG G3.

I'm kinda in between whether I want my build to run both OS X and Windows or just be a fulltime hackintosh.

I'm thinking of doing the former because well I want to also buy an HP Envy 15t slim quad which obviously runs Windows which if my Creative stuff was on Windows I could just have it on a flash drive and use the program on either my laptop or desktop.

It was removed because of unifying the operating system across platforms. Aero wasted both CPU and GPU cycles that simply ate away battery life for just a simple window effect. I personally don't see it making its way back to the Windows operating system as Microsoft is still pushing forward with Windows 10 as a unified OS. Tho if you're one for flashy stuff Compiz on Linux can offer far better effects than what can be done on Windows.  :P

Thanks for the responses, everyone.

I love WIndows 7, but you have all brought up some great points and so I will be trying out WIndows 8.1 with my new build.
