Fx 6300 multiplier drops to 7x every few seconds

Hi,

I want do overclock my AMD Fx 6300 a little bit. I set it to 200Mhz x 19 @ 1,25V. In prime95 the multiplier drops to 7x every few seconds, even though the temperature never surpasses 60°C according to core temp. I also disabled AMD turbo Core Technology in the BIOS, cause I heard that will prevent throttling.

Also after some time the drops seems to appear more often.

I'm using the stock cooler btw.

Anyone an idea what's the problem and how to solve it?

[EDIT] The mainboard is a ASRock 960GM/U3S3 Fx

I believe that's cool and quiet, you can disable it in the UEFI/BIOS. It's a power saving feature.

Cool N' Quiet, maybe? Even though I never had that problem with my Sempron.

If your motherboard has the option to disable Application Power Management(APM) then disable it. All it does is cause problems.

Is everyone avoiding the fact that it might be thermal throttling?
That doesn't happen only if the CPU is hot

You shouldn't need to disable Cool N' Quite as that won't have any adverse effects on loads. You have another problem going on if Prime95 is running and the core keeps backing off.

60C is quite hot for that chip so it's more than likely the chip actually throttling itself. I would reset it to stock and get an aftermarket cooler before you do any overclocking.

It's disabled automatically when the multiplier is changed

do you have ASUS Suite installed ? go to EPU which should have a leaf and change to auto and select none on the Downgrade Vcore

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

to track this issue down, we need to see the motherboard model number.

There are a number of causes for the multiplier dropping, the most common but only takes effect if the system is not under full load, is the cool n quiet.

If you are getting it while under load, and the CPU is not overheating, then the issue may be that you are reaching the power delivery limits of the VRM's. (this is common with very low end motherboards, especially the lower end micro ATX ones which will use 4 phase power with no heat sinks on the VRM's, (thus after a certain power draw is reached, the multiplier is automatically dropped).

FX 6300 knows how to drop it like its hot

When your cpu's getting heat

drop it like its hot, drop it like its hot, drop it like its hot

MB throttling seems plausible. The mainboard is a ASRock 960GM/U3S3 Fx

Not an optimal board for overclocking first off with a weak VRM while not being adequately cooled. Your CPU isn't getting adequate cooling either as 60C is quite hot for the chip. Which may be due to extremely hot mosfets raising socket temperatures. I would first start with a new board and then add in a aftermarket cooler if you want to do any overclocking.
