ps/2 Mouse and keyboard do not work on turning on the system every next day!

My computer configuration:

Age: 7-8 yrs old ( :D  )

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 at 2.66 GHz

Motherboard: Intel D101GGC

RAM: 1.5 GB

OS: Windows XP Professional SP3

I do not use a UPS for my system. Sometimes, when there is a power cut, when all my household devices switch to my Home Inverter, CPU switches off....but the keyboard and mouse still have there bulbs glowing (though the cpu is "OFF").

I have been facing a weird problem since a month or two.On turning on the PC initially, the keyboard LEDs blink once and the mouse LED starts glowing as usual. But, after windows loads, they do not work!! the mouse still has power supply but moving it doesn't move the pointer. The keyboard goes dead(none of the keys work). But the USB mouse works fine. On restarting the system once or twice, they start working again. This happens again the next day!!(about 10 hrs later).

Is it some hardware failure or some sort of virus!?!

OK, first of all, why do you have a system that old? Try a USB mouse and keyboard.

Maybe the chipset of your mainboard is defective or windows xp has some kind of powersaving feature for usb devices.
But I´m not that experienced with windows xp.

I was kidding, jeez. Why do you think I have 3 P4 systems,  2 PIII systems, and a Pentium 1 system?

@Majestic ... I am a complete newbie to such stuff...could you please help out a bit more!!

He means you can't just plug a PS2 device and expect to work when the PC is on, it needs to be off then you plug it in and then boot.
