Windows 8.1 To Go - USB 3.0 64GB Flash Drive

_nv

So recently I bought a PNY 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive from here -> http://amzn.com/B00FDUHDAC

I sat down and I thought of ways I could use it beside flash storage.

1. Portable Windows (I can get it through MS DreamSpark for schools)

2. Network share via Samba  (I now have a 500GB HDD for this)

3. Offsite backups

4. ???

I decided on portable Windows, using the WindowsToGo function I've been hearing about.

I can use Windows 8.1 Enterprise given to me by my school via DreamSpark.

But why?

Well, I go between PCs a lot.

2 laptops and 2 desktops at home means a lot of stuff management between PCs, and instead of wasting time with files and where they are, I can just plug my WTG drive in and boot into a working Windows 8.1, even at school!

Also, if I'm feeling really good, I might install Ubuntu and use GRUB to manage the OSes on the drive (32GB Windows, 32GB Ubuntu)

What do you think?

Don't do it. Boot times will be very slow.

Well, it's worth a try. If it doesn't work well, I can just format and run portable Ubuntu on it, which will boot much faster.

Don't, you will need a relatively fast USB to do it. A cheap USB 3.0 will take like 10 minutes to boot and another to respond. I've tested, external hdd or a Kingston datatraveler ultimate g3 as a minimum for usbs.
