Heatsink without fan for cpu cooling?

Pooherino ツ

So i have a hyper evo 212. And the fan is extremely loud and annoying. It is possible that i dont use the fan at all? Im not overclocking my cpu so i dont think its gonna be that hot. And if u have to use a fan which one would u guys suggest?

Oh hyper evo how you bring me back. If silence is what you want then your best bet is the Noctua NF-F12 PWM. Oh and yeah that heat sink was made with the intention of a fan blowing the hot air out of does fins, so a fan is a most.

Some cases you can get away with not having a fan on a CPU cooler. But you generally need a dual tower.

You can easily replace the fan though.

You can try passive cooling, but monitor your temperatures closely.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

Depends on the CPU, but more than likely you will need a fan. You can use a fan controller or have your motherboard fan header set to have dynamic speeds, so you can do that to cut down on noise. If needed, you can also get a quieter fan like a Noctua.

If your case is good ventilated it can run fanless in applications without high cpu use.

BUT I would recommend you not doing it! You can buy a cheap replacement fan with max 1300rpm or even lower.

You can even change in your bios the settings to controll the cpu fan rpm, or the minimum % it needs to run at.

Try some different bios settings, see if that helps.

Thats not happening with a passive 212. Maybe with an NH-D14 and very good case airflow. Changing the fan on the 212 will reduce noise slightly but if you really want queit you're gonna have to buy something with a bigger heatsink.
