Home Server PC (Pfsense/FreeNAS/Possibly Windows Server)

AverageHardware

Hello forum,

I'm planning to build a PC with very low performance hardware so that I can use it as a router/NAS. Are these parts viable for my needs?

(Network will have 2 PCs, 10+ wireless devices, 2x1TB drives)(I know it's not a lot to need a dedicated PC for a router, but I like experimenting and messing with things!)

WD Green are not suitable for NAS or system drives.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Hello!

WD Green drives are designed for archiving and back ups and have IntelliPower, and many people don't prefer them for NAS storages or RAID systems.

Drives, designed for that are the WD Red – made to withstand the NAS/RAID environment 24/7 and with higher reliability.

I felt the AM1 platform might be perfect for this job:

CPU: AMD 3850 1.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($29.99 @ Micro Center)
Motherboard: ASRock AM1B-ITX Mini ITX AM1 Motherboard  ($41.38 @ OutletPC)
Wired Network Adapter: StarTech ST1000SPEXD3 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI-Express x1 Network Adapter  ($59.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $315.86
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You can lower the price by doing various things here, but I decided to pick a little bit higher quality components (You don't want your NAS or router to die suddenly right?)

Laptop: Intel Core i5-4200H, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce 840M

Desktop: Intel Core i3-6100, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce GTX 750 Ti
