290X Driver Problem

Hello all!

6 months ago I set up my computer; here are the specs.

i7 4770k, Corsair H105

AsRock z97 Extreme 6 Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB 1600MHz RAM

Fractal Arc Midi R2 Windowed (Replaced all fans with corsair af140/sp120 on rad)

Corsair RM650 PSU

Windows 7 64Bit

A month or so after I installed everything and had been gaming, my computer crashed for some reason and I was forced to hold down the power button to turn off the computer and hard-reset it.

When I booted back up my computer wouldn't output an image, so I went through the troubleshooting process. Realised it was a driver error which must have been corrupted with the hard-reset.

Another month down the line it did the same thing for no reason, just a black screen. I have reinstalled and removed the drivers about 10times, changed the BIOS value for default output device from onboard to pci-e, used multiple cables/cable types; i'm truely stumped.

So for the past couple of months i've been gaming on Intel HD Graphics as i've been bogged under with work. I thought it would be a good idea to ask the guys at linustech for some help!

Thanks in advance,

Oliver Legg / Radioactivetux

290x driver problem? inb4 "lel bcuz amd drivers suck bawls"

Almost sounds like more of a firmware error, AMD drivers have been having problems recently, but nothing of that magnitude.

You say you've tried removing drivers, have you tried on a new windows install?

Edit: could be a windows 7 issue, there've been some issues where newer drivers are only really made for windows 8, as the two are very similar. That might be the root, but i'm no expert

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

I've reinstalled windows to no effect, apologies for not mentioning this before. I know it is not a fault with the card as i've used it in a friends machine of similar spec.

Now that I think about it, it was before the problem occured the second time that I reinstalled windows, but i'd like to find a solution before windows is reinstalled.

Err, I'm not an expert on this at all. However, if it works in a friend's system, then at least the card is still good. All I can suggest is to look for a motherboard BIOS update, as it improves compatibility with certain hardware. Another thing that can help is maybe a BIOS update for the card itself, but I don't know. The card seems fine. Go ahead and reinstall Windows, and if the problem still persists, look for a BIOS update on the motherboard, graphics card, anything.

I guess you could also see if the problem persists in Linux. Just boot off a USB, and see if it goes black. The problem is likely not Windows, but we are eliminating variables. Maybe the 14.12 omega drivers aren't playing well with your card.

So here is the weird thing... I reinstalled windows fresh, got everything up and running and the card outputted. Then windows crashed to the point of no return and now it isn't working again. I've also never updated a bios on either a mono or gpu before. Pointers?
