Can I use a laptop HDD in a desktop?

Ripull

I found this thing lying around from my last laptop which blew up:

I don't care about how well it will perform as it won't be my main HDD, I just want to know if it will be possible to use in a desktop build.

Also, as a side question, how do I format a HDD, this thing has got quite a bit of crap on it including a Windows 7 OS.

Sure, it will work :) to format it you can use a linux live cd or a gparted bootable disc.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

It will work fine, but depending on your case you might need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter(If your case has SSD mounts then mount the drive on the SSD mount. They are the same size). For formatting your HDD, you can right click the drive in Windows file explorer, or you can format it from the Disk Management page under Computer Management.

Hi there!

Yes, you can use this drive in your desktop once you format it (for which you can use Windows). Also, I agree with @QueenDemetria about the form factor and that you may need a 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter if you don't have a SSD mount in your computer case.

Cheers! :)

As mentioned, they work fine. I've personally got a 500 GB drive from my old laptop in my desktop.

They use the same SATA/SATA power connectors as the larger drives.

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!
