PT Nuke and Kill Coils

I'm doing my first liquid cooling loop and I didn't know what the difference in function was between the two in the title and ended up buying both.

Would it be safe to use both in my loop at the same time?

No, you could get some nasty chemical reactions by mixing stuff like that.

Just use the kill coil.

Dont even bother with kill coils, Premixed coolants come with everything required to keep your loop clean and working correctly. If you add coils you will find that tiny buildups occour in your blocks and rads.

1) Just make sure not to mix metals

2) use premixed coolants, I have done many many LC loops and I always use Mayhems coolant and I have never herd anything go wrong/bad about them.

Jayztwocents recently covered this in a video where he talks bout old coolants vs new ones and that premixed coolants have all the antibacterial stuff in them, however raw distilled water will need a few drops (2) of PT nuke or a silver kill coil.

Glad I saw this thread as I’m also just about to build my first custom loop :)

Just waiting on the parts...

I’m planning on using distilled water in my loop and was wondering whether to go for a biocide like PT Nuke or just a silver kill coil

From what I’ve read so far kill coil seems to be the way to go, what do you guys think?

F**k the lemons and bail

I have been using both in my loop for 2 years now without any "extra" damage to my components. I change my distilled water every 6-8 months or so and every time i change the water i clean the silver coil and then add one drop of PT Nuke to the new distilled water after i do a flush with warm water and vinegar. You can use either the silver coils or the PT Nuke by itself.

Actually, DO USE the premixed nonsense, it lasts longer than plain distilled and you can get some nice colours for your loops with this method as he explained in the video. There is nothing wrong with using premixed stuff anymore, they don't gunk up as much as they used to either from all the research I have put into this, if the price of premixed stuff puts you off, well again as mentioned in the video maybe you shouldn't be watercooling as maintenance is an inherent part of any PC be it on air or water (you need to clean both as dust etc will greatly reduce the way your coolers do their jobs on air).

Can I just say I'm currently on Distilled as it was my first go around with no PT nuke or Kill coil so next time I'll buy some or just go premixed cos it has the stuff... "PREMIXED"  ;)

From the research I've done, it is down to preference, PT nuke adds a bit of a blue tinge while a kill coil or a silver plug (you screw one of these into a radiator or other empty threaded plug hole) which basically just kills the bacteria. If you go premixed you won't have to really worry about this but that is entirely up to you. For me personally I would just drop some PT nuke in (2 drops) and leave it at that.  :)

Just be careful how often you clean out those rads because the vinegar is an acid and will eat the metals etc, I know this will take quite some time but it should be noted for other new watercooling enthusiasts that might read this thread.

Distilled vinegar is a very very weak acid. It will not corrode the inside of your rad.

On a side note, drop in as much PT Nuke as it says on the label, how much you need to mix in is not a constant. Do not use a kill coil with coolant.

Noted, I didn't include that in what I said so was unclear, thank you for clearing that up but I did say it would take quite some time but I didn't mention that white vinegar or distilled vinegar is weak sorry.  :)

That video from J2C is pretty interesting. For my upcoming loop I'm planning on using distilled water with a kill coil. I don't mind changing every 6 months but honestly with my previous experience with pre-made liquids I think I'll be going with distilled water from now on.

My tubing pretty much got as gunked up as his did in his video. To be fair it was in there a long time (not nearly as long as his though lol) and it was sorta old Koolance liquid from 2011, so there may be better stuff out there now. Personally I'm going with clear tubing and distilled water for my first loop, just as I would like to see the water flowing and stuff for setting it up the first time. When I do maintenance in another 6 months I'll probably just replace the tubing too with something colored. Anyways I think that it's best to just use distilled water and colored tubing. Most experienced water coolers also suggest this, even Linus does in his extreme water cooling build video. You know nothing is gonna gunk up your blocks or your pump, and if you are worried about color just get tubing that's colored. I just don't want to have to deal with gunked up tubing or stuff floating in my loop lol it was so gross and could potentially effect my loop.

That's understandable but as it said in the video your tubing can break down and end up with gunk regardless, also you said you didn't change it so i bet that combined with it being an old 2011 coolant was were the problem had come from. That a side, I'll do a comparison when I move from distilled to UV fluid.

Yeah part of my poor results were not changing it often, that's why I made sure to add that. But something about colored liquid and stuff doesn't seem good to be to be using with a pump. It may be really fine I just thought that water would be much safer and couldn't harm my pump in any way especially since it was pretty expensive.

Yeah i know about vinegar being an acid and such and mu solution is 3/4 of my loop full with warm, not hot, warm water and then the rest is topped off with vinegar and i run that for about fifteen minutes then flush with plain distilled water about twice then put fresh distilled water in with the kill coil.

I used to use lemon juice to clean my blocks but i have found vinegar works better in less time.

The way dye is made explained in that video and his video I posted before that leads to gunking up, but again it falls down to the end user ie you or me maintaining the loop. I'll always be a fan of coloured dyes with mayhems nano fluids like their pastels being my all time fave based on the research I have, their constant support via email or even on forums that and they are based here in the UK.

Yeah it's highly recommended to do it that way with vinegar from what I have found, when I replace my coolant I shall be doing the same as yourself.  :)

No doubt clear tubing with colored liquid looks awesome, that's what I had in my last loop. Good luck with yours, are you setting it up soon?

I currently live at home while studying and we're having major house work done so won't be able to really get the ball rolling until summertime next year, I plan on having the build complete by the start of the new term when I move out for university. I need to do a bit of research into UV coolants, lighting and UV paint.  :)
