Will it fit in the top without having to remove the bays?

Will a 280mm radiator fit in the front of the Fractal Design Define R5 without having to remove the optical drive cage?

Thanks

Just found this on Fractal Design's website: "Top – 420, 360, 280, 240, 140 and 120 mm radiators. (A thickness limitation of 55mm for both radiator + fan applies on 420, 280 and 140 mm radiators) (420 and 360 mm radiators require removal of the ODD bay)" So only the 420 and 360 mm rads require you to remove the optical drives.

Awesome, thanks. I found a similar picture on their website, but it didn't go into all this detail.

Yes, but:-

Can only be fastened with 6 out of 8 screws.

Requires removal of both HDD cages from the front position.

Length of radiator restricted to 322mm with the ODD cage still in place.

Yes but you are limited to 55mm thick and :-

Requires removal of fan in rear position.

I'm looking at the NZXT Kraken X61, which is 27mm rab and 25 mm fans. So you are only at 52mm

Fair one.

I suppose they have to mention that limitation so you(TINY) don't start whinging when you(TINY) try to shoehorn a 60mill rad in there and it doesn't fit. ;)

Captain here. I watercooled my own R5. It does work, but depending on the radiator. High end radiators with one end that has lots of inlet/outlet options, you would have to make that extra long end point downward.

But as for most average to slim profile 280mm rads, it would fit without taking out the optical cage.

I removed mine, but that's because I have another 360mm rad on top.

For high end rads with long ends, I meant like this one,

Alphacool-NexXxoS-Monsta-280mm-Radiator-

Hi everyone,

this is my first posting here and you have to excuse my bad English. ;)

I don´t want to create a new thread, so here are the following questions:

Is there one of you, who can confirm, that a 280mm radiator fits on the top of a Define R5 case,

whithout removing the optical drive bases? Loosing the rear fan isn´t an option either.

I read this stuff above, but doesn´t satisfy me.

I want to build an x99 based system in a Define R5 case.

I think about to use:
Case: Define R5

MB: AsRock X99X Killer / 3.1 or X99 Extreme6 3.1 (after reading the Issues with the Asus X99-Boards) Asus X99 Pro-3.1 would have been my first choice)

Ram: 16Gb (4x4) Corsair Vengeance LPX 2133

AIO: 280mm:NZXT Kraken x61 or Corsair H110i GT or if they don´t fit:
CoolerMaster Nepton 240 M or Fractal Design Klevin S24

Thank you in advance for your comments and answers.

Gonzo

Edit: Some pictures of your built in 280 top-rad would be fine! ;)

Yes a 280 will fit up top without removing optical drive. The back fan may require sacrifice if the orientation is forced tubes backward.

I'd recommend the x99a sli plus board personally.

Also get 8 GB dimms because running 8 dimms at above 2400 speed is insanely difficult for haswell-e cpus. And thus you limit your upgrade path by choosing 4x4.

Sorry to necro a thread like this, but I'd like to know wether you think a top 360 and a front 360 would fit if they were both 26mm thick? (EK CoolStream SE360) I've been looking at the measurements and stuff, and it seems like it would, but I haven't seen it been done.

In both the Define S and R5 it is possible. Obviously in the R5 you kill the front 5.25 bays.
