Surface Pro 3 or XPS 12?

Gandalf the Dank

I need some portability, but I also like tablets. Currently, the Dell XPS 12 (4 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, 1.98 GHz i5) is $999, and the comparable Surface Pro 3 is the same price.

While the Pro is more portable in the sense that I don't need to open up a keyboard each time I need to use it, it's a double-edged sword because I don't get an actual laptop keyboard (I'd need to spend even more to get the Pro keyboard case). It's thinner than the XPS 12, and has a better screen, but the XPS 12 storage can be upgraded.

Should I just buy one at Best Buy and return it/exchange it for the other if I don't like it?

Step up, you fools.

Do you want a tablet or a laptop?

This is the real question.

Personally, I would go with the XPS as it's probably more durable and the physical keyboard is a big bonus for me.

Sig under construction.

Macbooks don't have touchscreens IIRC, and the Yoga 3 pro actually sounds pretty decent to me.

If you are going to order an XPS 12 avoid ordering directly from Dell. I ordered mine on Black Friday and the current ETA is the 5th of January. They have terrible customer support, especially for a "premium" device. I am on the verge of cancelling mine and going for a Macbook pro. At least Apple has great customer service.

As others have said, the Lenovo Yoga 3 is worth a look (I'd say it strikes the middle ground between XPS 12 and the Surface Pro 3).

I would also suggest the Thinkpad Yoga (typing on one now), about the same weight and build as the XPS12, so more laptopy than tablety, but has Wacom pen functionality similar to the Surface pro 3 which the dell (and yoga 3) lacks (the pen holder is integrated into the laptop, so that particular rant need not apply).

You should consider your need for I/O connectivity here too. The Surface pro 3 has just 1 usb and a micro-displayport, whereas the Dell XPS, Lenovo Yoga 3 and Thinkpad Yoga each have 2 x USB3 and a micro-displayport (dell) or microHDMI (Lenovo). The Dell lacks an SD card reader if that matters, all the other options have one.

Good luck!

I would agree with that. The macbook air is a really good laptop and also (shockingly) quite cheap as well. And with the ability to run windows as well, I'd say it is one of the best "ultrabooks" you can buy right now.

MacBook Pro 15' 2018 (Pretty much the only system I use)
