What is your home network like?

Gandalf the Dank

Previously, mine was:

Comcast modem/router --> basement office switch --> unused cable to one side of second story/used cable to router on other side of second story

Now it's:

Own modem --> switch --> that same router and also an ethernet port in almost every room

I rewired the house with Cat6. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

Step up, you fools.

I've got a central 20-port switch (1Gbps per port) installed right next to all breakers --> 10 wall LAN outlets with 2 Ethernet ports each --> One of which is hooked up to a RT-N56U for wireless coverage + Samba Server, the rest of the apartment's PCs are hooked up to nearby wall outlets.

Cheers,

Linus

Had a wireless adapter for my PC, thought that usually ping spike and slow net was due to ISP (Shaw in Canada). Used ethernet cable and it almost never ping spikes nor does my net get slow.

We've got the modem/router combo that Telus gave us connected wirelessly to everything. The main floor of our house has at least 4 cable jacks, but only one phone line. Our desktop sits across the room from the phone jack because that is the only place for a desk to go, so even it is on a wireless connection. When I get my gaming PC I'm going to bring the modem/router upstairs so I have a wired connection on my desktop.

Eventually I want to switch ISPs and get our own router. Lightspeed.ca looks like a good choice to me.

Two connections in one home:

Dad's connection (Demon):

Router --> Switch --> Devices and Apple Time Capsule > Wireless devices

Mine and Mom's connection (BT):

Router --> Wireless devices + my computer --> Ethernet to the other side of the house - Airport Extreme --> WiFi Devices, PS3 --> HomePlug to the middle of the house --> Mom's iMac.

Sig under construction.

For my grandma's it's like this. AT&T modem/router (everyone in the house), broadcasting wireless G + ethernet for granny (port 1), stepdad (port 2), and my router (port 0) --> Netgear WNR2000v3, broadcasting wireless (for me, I want to say it's AC or N) and ethernet for all of my other computers.

For my dad's it's comcast modem/router combo --> WNR1000? router, broadcasting wireless G, and ethernet for his computer (port 0) and our Xbox 360 (port 1). Then my sister's Dell in her room is tethered to her netbook through ethernet, which is hooked up to the wireless.

                                                                                                                       > VOIP SIP Box (Linksys SPA2102)

Modem > Main Gigabit N750 5GHz router (Netgear WNDR4300 DD-WRT)    > My PC

                                                                                                                       > 10/100 Wireless AP / Switch for every ethernet wall outlet in the house. (ASUS RT-N12, Stock firmware)

That's the setup I went with. I get the the full gigabit speed on my PC and Wireless N750 on my portable devices, because my room is right beside where the main router is. While everyone else in the house get 10/100 wireless N300.

Of course, the SIP box get priority, since it replaces our phone lines.

I went this way, because DD-WRT's wifi has had issues for months now and the stock firmware simply doesn't have the feature we require to act as a main router. (From Advanced QoS settings to actually being able to provide the right internet speed... stock firmware somehow cuts our Upload from 10Mbps to 3Mbps...)

I personally rarely use Wifi so even if it just stops working after a while, I don't mind as I'm the only one connected to it on the main router, don't have to hear some idiot shout at me.

So instead of buying a new, expensive gigabit wireless N router, just got some cheap ones that's advertised as having AP settings, though I'm totally using it in router mode, works better that way.

It's not "ideal", but considering I'm sharing my network with my brother who lives upstairs, that the best compromise I was willing to do. (Also because I've limited his network speed right in the Asus AP, F that guy, not even willing to help pay for the internet yet is mad if I just cut it outright... At least it's one global setting in the AP for the network speed, don't have to bother with QoS his MAC address to a lower speed or something in the main router, like I was doing before, so it's easier on me)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro
