Question about LGA 2011(-v3) socket and CPU series.

Vergil33

Does all Intel processor in the E series always use 2011 or 2011-v3 socket? Like Sandy-Bridge-E, Ivy Bridge-E and Haswell-e processor they are all 2011 socket and 2011-v3 socket (Haswell-e)

Or am i wrong or or have I misunderstood something? What does the "E" stand for?

No. They change the socket whenever they need to redesign the CPU pins. 2011 is not the same as 2011-3. In a few years there will be something different then 2011

Make sure you know that 2011 and 2011-v3 are not compatible. They are a diffrenct socket.

But can we expect that Broadwell-E or Skylake-E (if there is one) will use either 2011 or v3 socket?

Assuming the previous trend of X79 continues, X109? X119? Or whatever it'll be named (broadwell -eor skylake -e) will most likely use the 2011-3 socket.

based on the fact that broad well uses lga 1150, the same as haswell, but skylake is 1151, wouldn't you think skylake-e will get away from the 2011-3 socket? whereas broad well will use it? just speculation but

That is, assuming there will be broadwell e. According to leaks skylake is coming in 2015 (Q3) so i don't think intel would cram in another E series.

Indeed 2011 is a differnt socket than 2011-3

However a heatsink or water block for either socket will work with each other,
