PC in a desk (build log/advice needed)

Hello, I'm planning an ambitious project of moving my current PC setup inside my desk, I've seen amazing videos on YouTube and I've also come to realize that I've spent a lot of money on components and yet there hidden away inside a case.

Here is my current setup (excuse the cluttered desk)

post-170158-0-22967000-1418918136_thumb.

and here is what is inside my PC Case.

post-170158-0-10172800-1418918387_thumb.

It consists of:

Coolermaster 912 Plus case

ASUS Sabertooth 990fx R2.0 Motherboard

AMD FX8350 8 core processor

Corsair Vengence 8GB (2x4GB) Ram

Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo cpu cooler

MSI AMD HD Radeon 6970 Graphics Card

EVGA Supernova 650w PSU

DVD RW Drive (no idea of the make, hardly use it)

Scythe Kaze Master Fan Controller

I will be taking the coolermaster hyper 212 evo out and putting in a corsair H80i Liquid cooler as the 212 evo requires a lot more space than i want to give up.

I've done some crude mock-ups using publisher and it gives me a rough idea of where i want things to go.

Here is the top down view of the desk:

post-170158-0-11007200-1418919221_thumb.

Here is the front view

post-170158-0-26824800-1418919225_thumb.

Here is the Back View

post-170158-0-13312200-1418919227_thumb.

I will be "modding" the desk i currently have. I'm torn on whether or not to buy glass or clear acrylic perspex? the glass or perspex will be resting on a metal strip that will be screwed to the underneath and sticking out of the glass or perspex by around 1cm.

I also need advice on how to get into the "case" compartment when i need to perform maintenance.

Any input on anything will be greatly appreciated as I've never attempted anything like this before, I'm pretty confident with power tools, It should be around £200 to do all this, around £20 for the glass or perspex, around £20 for some MDF or plywood, and I'll need some new Silent 1200mm fans, an electric saw to cut the top of the desk for the glass or perspex to fit in and the Corsair H80i cooler.

Also I'm thinking of getting some clamps and some off cuts of wood so i can keep the saw thing on a straight line, I've only got one shot at this and I'm not that good at straight lines.

Thank you and i will be updating this post as I'm building the new "case"

Sorry I can't offer any advice because I have no experience with case modding.

However, I wish you luck...and your layout looks solid to me.

Cheers.

Do you plan to hide your cables? it will look a lot better if they are nicely hidden.

Dude...  That looks AMAZING the only recommendation I have, is put the top of the desk on hinges that rotate upwards so you can easily open it up to access the interns.

Some holes in the bottom of the desk will make doing that easy.

i had thought about this, I also thought of maybe having little tabs on the glass or Perspex so I can just pull it out as I don't want to see the hinges, I'm not too sure on how I would attach the hinges to the glass or Perspex.

I've just seen you're edited picture, I suppose it could work like that, plus I was thinking of having my monitor on a stand that clamps to the desk so that the monitor stand doesn't hide much of the insides.

So the cables hang underneath the desk? I was more thinking of a space in between, but the challenge that brings is that the desk would become too thick.

I think I'm going to wing this bit, I'm working a lot over the Christmas and I plan on starting this in the new year, as I said I only have one shot so I don't want to get it wrong, I do like the look of the EVGA cables, they would be a lot better if they were individually sleeved but I settled for less, anyway I think if I lay them out neatly attached to the baseboard it'll have a nice look to them but I'll know for certain when I do a test run/look.

Well hinges would not work well with a monitor clamp attached to the desk, maybe you could bake an extension on the back of the desk to clamp the monitor stand to.

My point exactly, as you can see from my current desk picture, it's not that high, where the keyboard currently lives, 2cm bellow that is where the base of where the components will set and I can "just" get my legs under.

I've just remembered, the desk was a flat pack from staples, the top part of the desk sits on top of the sides and I think lifting the weight of the top board, and somehow keeping it up kinda like a car sounds kinda strange, thank you though, it really does help!

And wouldn't that make it so that there are visible holes in the desk? It would be cleaner to have at least something to cover it up, all components are towards the rear, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a plate just to cover the cables up. And it shouldn't be impossible to still make accessible, it is more work, but it's better to target perfection for such projects.

Yeah I know! Haha.

I had thought of say a similar thing to how the keyboard tray is now where it pulls out, then all I have to do is unplug the cables at the back, but then the corsair cooler would instantly break! As it will be attached to a panel at the back which is already there. Yeah I think the best idea would be little tabs attached to the glass that I can just lift, it's not crucial as idol the I'll be going in there often but I don't want to be locked out!

Well the corsair cooler will be attached to the back panel, as I pull the tray out the cooler wont come with it as the tubes will stop it from coming out any further. So I think the best thing to do will be to have little plastic tabs somehow attached to the glass.

If it will pull out, just add a little wooden plank to attach the cooler to.  It will barely be noticeable if you paint it and it will be able to bring the radiator with it.

Yeah, thank you! I think the hinges could actually work, I realised that the baseboard that the motherboard and that will sit on will also act as support in place of the very top board, so that when I lift the top board on the hinge it won't wobble about. I'll just figure out where to put the hinges. Should be easy, again thank you!

Update!!

Well, I decided to cut out of cardboard the exact sizes of the various boards to see how they would look and where things would go.

Again I've made the slides in publisher.

this is the front board that will house the fans.

post-170158-0-88697900-1419091924_thumb.

as you can see I've prepared how i will be attaching the board to the desk.

the fans will be pretty close together on each side, from the picture they look pretty far apart.

Another thing you may have noticed is 2 fans each side and not 3, yeah I could only fit 2 in (glad i found out this early on).

I Still don't know how I'm going to attach the fans to the board itself, because I'm going to cut out the 120mm square, I want them to be flush with the board both the outside and on the inside, the thickness of the fans i want (Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition) is 2.5cm, so the thickness of the board has now increased to that. Quick search of google and i found this

post-170158-0-60524500-1419093248_thumb. http://www.screwfix.com/p/jointing-plates-zinc-plated-35-x-2-x-97mm-pack-of-10/66707

i think something similar to this will be fine, 1 end screws into the fan and the other screws into the board, this will be done on the inside as obviously i don't want to see this!

Next up is the part where the dvd drives and fan controller will be enclosed,

post-170158-0-02978700-1419091922_thumb.

I'm currently torn on whether or not to actually include the dvd drive as i only have space for two 5.25inch bays and i still havent found out how i will be actually turning the system on yet and i will need front USB 3.0 ports. As you can see in the bottom left I've come up with attaching the bays using an L Bracket,

post-170158-0-42373300-1419093578_thumb.

one side will attach to the bays and the other will be screwed onto the front board itself. It isn't going to be easy if i decide to remove one of the bays from the board as i will need to unscrew both sides just to remove the entire front board itself and then unscrew the bracket from the bay, so i might come up with another solution over the next few weeks. Excuse the picture of the side view of the bays, i moved them last minute and the front red bit didn't move with it so it looks a little off! My bad.

Next we have the baseboard.

post-170158-0-91772400-1419091916_thumb.

As you can see I've mapped out how it will look when its (srot of) finished, in the top right is the back board that currently is attached to the desk and there I will have spaces cut out for the corsair liquid cooler, another fan to the left of the motherboard (which i forgot to include) and finally spaces for the io panel and exhaust of the PSU.

I was reading this morning for ideas on how to attach the motherboard to the baseboard and the best and probably easiest solution would be to drill down, round the top part of the hole where i will then glue a washer on that hole so that i can screw in a normal motherboard standoff, its so i can change the motherboard if need be and to keep it raised off the base. I had seen people cut out from an old case the bottom so that all the ATX size holes would be there but more than likely i will be able to see that as I'm looking in, I mean i could spray that board with the same colour that the baseboard is going to be (possibly black), but i don't really fancy chopping up my Coolermast HAF case, same with the PCI and IO Panel part, i think i will have to cut that part out of a case as i can't find one anywhere that delivers to the UK.

Anyway that is my update for now, the cardboard cut outs are really bad looking in the pictures but aside from that i can see how each part is going to be and like I've said from the beginning i only have one chance so I'm taking my time as much as i want to get going tomorrow!

Thanks!!
