Do I need to cool my HDD?

Spev

Just curious if I need to have fans blowing on my HDD. I want to possibly mount my HDD in one of my 5 1/4 inch bays so I can remove my hard drive cages and am wondering if this really needs to be cooled or not or if it would be fine.

Unless you live somewhere with extreme temperatures I don't think that it's really necessary.

It can be a problem, depending on your setup, as we all know that hot air rises and if you're planning on mounting your HDD at the top of the case without any airflow it can get to be a problem. Can't really say much more about this at this point. But it's always worth monitoring the temperatures.

However, there are solutions that will let you stick your HDD in a cage and be cooled by that without the need of an extra fan.

As long as your temps are decent, it should be fine. I check my temps using CrystalDiskInfo and prefer to keep my drives <40c.

You can also use hardware monitor (same guys as CPU-Z) to check your HDD/SDD temps.

Most consumer platter drives are most comfortable between 35 and 50 degrees celsius. There is realistically no need to worry about cooling them unless your case has overall terrible air flow, all the other components are kicking heat about, and you're rendering a video onto one of them for 3+ hours.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Unless you have next to no airflow in your case, the hot air won't rise, as it's constantly being sucked in and pushed out the exhaust before it has any time to sit around and rise inside the case.

If he sticks it in a spot where there's very little airflow it may have issues if it's in the top of the case, but if he has decent ventilation it shouldn't be an issue at all.

Usually it's not needed but if you are constantly using it you could point a fan at it, just monitor the temps and see yourself.

no. I had my HDD behind the motherboard tray like a ssd in my last case, it never got over the optimal working temperature of 31°C xD
