Subwoofer on desk or carpet floor?

Cs342

Where should I put my subwoofer? Does it matter? It's just a really cheap $50 2.1 PC speaker set.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Its not because of that. Its because of vibration transfer.

but if you are really close to it it could damage your hearing if playing loud

No, it's just that subwoofers perform better when placed on the floor, don't vibrate your table and don't take in table space.

What if it's a carpet floor? Does it affect the sound quality?

I am by no means an audiophile, so take everything I say here with a grain of salt. From my understanding, putting it on your desk will give you more of a punchy sound, but putting it on the floor (carpet or otherwise) allows the vibrations created to pass through the room better, creating more of an enveloping sound. Even for a weaker $50 set of speakers, it can make a big difference. It's ultimately up to preference how you want it to sound. Do you want to feel the vibration, and hear less of it? Or feel and hear the punch of it, and feel less of the vibration and an overall less-expansive sound?

Every object in the room effects sound quality of a speaker. Carpet is good because it doesn't reflect sound, which you don't want with a subwoofer.

The manufacturers design them to be put on the floor, so using them otherwise might get you other results.

Also: putting it on the ground also creates a small low pass effect because you're off-axis.

If it had a low slope and some higher freqs were coming trough, putting it on the ground reduces that.

Aside from putting it on the floor, putting it in a corner of your room if you can would also be ideal. You get the best results when you can place your sub against a wall or in the corner of the room.

How does that work? I only have carpets so I put it top of my thin carpeted floor
