Half-price Corsair RM 750W vs other power supplies

Markus123

Hi,

I need a power supply for my new-ish build (i7 4790k, GTX 760 with potential to add a second one later). I've been offered a new Corsair RM 750W for cheap (£45 - about half the price they retail at). Originally I was set on getting this PSU, but the more I read about it the more I'm thinking I should get a different one due to people saying the RM series has poor quality capacitors.

One of my main considerations for the build is it being as quiet under load as possible (it'll be paired with a Fractal Define R5 & NH-D15). The RM 750W fits this well as it's supposed to be very quiet up to ~400W load which is a big plus, but at the same time I don't want it to blow up 12 months down the line and potentially take out other components.

Just how bad is the RM series? Is it better to pay double the price and get a EVGA SuperNOVA G2 (or equivalent) which is going to be noisier too, or should the RM 750W be okay?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Edit: it's brand new, still sealed. A spare a friend bought but doesn't need now

Half price of retail is what it should be. I would definitely say get it, it's not awful it's just overpriced. You seem to have fixed that. The supernova g2 is a shining example of how good a psu can be without spending a fortune, it's much better than an rm and at retail much cheaper too. But if you have the chance to spend half as much I would go with the RM for sure but only if it's new. I personally don't go for used stuff so get the G2 if it's not brand new.

Thanks for the replies, still a little undecided but I had a quick question about the EVGA SuperNova G2 750W if somebody could answer.

Do you know at what wattage the fan turns on in ECO mode? There seems to be conflicting information around. How loud do you think the fan would get with my build under heavy load (gaming + streaming):

Intel 4790K @ stock

Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H

MSI TF GTX 760

16GB RAM (DDR3 1866MHz)

Thanks again.

You don't have much of a draw there. If you're not overclocking you probably won't have the fan on at all. Even if you do, it's a high quality ball bearing fan and doesn't make much noise if any at all. The G2 is a much better unit quality wise than the RM. OTOH, that RM is one heck of a deal. If it was my money, I'd grab the RM. It isn't *that* bad, just overpriced.

Thanks for the replies, he's actually just given me the RM 750W for free so I'll go with it for now. Even though it uses lower quality capacitors I haven't read about many failures yet, I'll keep an eye out and if more people start getting failures I'll perhaps switch it out to something different at a later date.

Thanks again.

The capacitors aren't low quality--they're just mediocre for the 'high end' tier that the RM series was advertising/pricing.

@Markus123 the jonnyguru review of the G2 750 has observed it operating fanless at room temperature at 50% capacity, or ~375 watts. And you have a very nice friend.
