Wingfan

What are the main differences in these drives?

Im using my i3 PC as a network storage, using a green drive but its really slow.

Any feedback would be great

green is bad as it parks its head in some intervals (like 3-4 sec and can be disabled but still) and has bunch of power saving bullsh**t

blue hdd that will do job for everything

black should be faster and generally better but some people say blue is better

I use black and its ok

Speed, and longevity I do believe. Green: Slow, Blue: Best all around, Black: Fastest and most reliable in the range

I would never get a green drive due to reasons mentioned above.

I've used the WD Blue and WD Black 1TB drives in builds before and they are both great choices.  I believe that the Black drive is the best of the three.

Greens are lower power, 5400RPM drives. They also run cooler.

Blues are average. They spin at 7200RPM, and are faster than the Greens.

Blacks are the top dog for typical consumers. They retain the 7200RPM spindle speed, but they tend to have more cache, run warmer, and run noisier than the Blues, and aren't that great of a drive when it comes down to price.

However, Barracudas run cool, quiet, and are just as fast as the Blues and some of the Blacks. :D @terrytek and I can both confirm this. My 250GB Blue runs noticeably warmer than my 1TB Barracuda, and my Blue is slower.

EDIT: BONUS!!! Reds are ideal for 24/7 operation, and are fairly similar to the Blacks, but I think most of them have more cache.

Purples are ideal for things like security systems. I believe that they are fairly identical to the Reds.

A "fast" 7200rpm hard drive is still a 7200rpm hard drive. My nod goes to WD Blues since they have nice performance that really isn't that different than Blacks, but reported as being quieter. Greens seem pointless to me since Reds are basically better Greens. It's not like a hard drive in a typical desktop set up even uses much power to begin with to even care.

Hi there @Wingfan!

The Green drive is made for storage purposes, WD Blue is for everyday computing and WD Black is a performance oriented drive.

Since you're looking for a NAS drive, I would suggest the WD Red because they're designed for such environment - it has reduced power consumption and lower the operating temperature, TLER, which helps the drive recover faster in case of read/write error and the drive doesn’t drop off the RAID, and are meant for 24x7 work load.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! :)

What is the difference between Red and Purple? It seems they do the exact same thing.

I ordered a Blue should be here tommorrow. Its only $50 for 1TB and should be good enough for what I need

The similarities are that both Red and Purple have IntelliPower and TLER enabled.

The difference is that WD Purple is equipped with AllFrame technology, which reduces video interruptions and has caching algorithms that are write-intensive. That's why it is recommended for surveillance and security systems use and not for use in NAS environments. WD Red drives on the other hand have firmware thats make them a good choice for NAS.

Greens are painfully slow, if you're using it for any day to day task, if its gaming or using the explorer or whatever.

I reccomend barracudas, they are the same price as blues but quite a lot faster, cooler and quieter.
