Sleep/Restarting Problems and Boot priority

Hi i'm new to the linus tech tips forum and I was hoping I can get help here where I couldn't in several other forums.

Here's the story, my friend has a samsung series 7 laptop (Model number- Np700z5c-s01ub) and his hard drive was going bad.  He ordered a samsung evo 840 ssd and installed it.  Since installing the new ssd the computer is running great everything is working properly and he's gaming as good as new.  When he closes the lid of the laptop or puts it to sleep/hibernation the screen turns off but the led's stay on and fans continue to run (seemingly only the screen turns off).  The computer will not wake from this and he has to hard boot it to get it to work.  When we hit shut down the computer ignores the command and when we he restart it just shuts down (does not reboot).  I can't test the computer myself because he's currently about 300 miles from me.  I've had him test everything from uninstalling all drivers to testing different software from windows and we even re-installed windows but nothing helped us.  I had the idea last night to get him to reinstall the old hdd to see if it had the booting problem on it and it did.  So i'm leaning towards a hardware failure but he can't afford to replace it.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Other than these things and a few minor issues which we can work out the laptop is functioning.

Also, it wouldn't boot from the disc when he re-installed windows and we changed the boot priority.  Now it automatically tries to boot from disc (at least 5 minutes on every boot) and he says it won't allow him to get back into bios.  He's not a really techie person so he's mostly just following my advice but i'm not sure how to get him back into bios without having the laptop in my hands.

Please if you guys could help us we'd really appreciate it!'

Thanks in advance.  I'll be checking this all day so I should be able to respond quickly with any information you need.

UPDATE:  Boot priorities are fixed and bios was reset.  Still not restarting or sleeping.

ANOTHER UPDATE:  Windows won't boot if he turns AHCI mode off but leaving it on auto or on won't allow it to sleep or restart at all.

Hey,

Originally I thought we where going to be looking at a power options etc but it all seems to be  going downhill, it could be the constant reboots have corrupted the install ....

Pull the SSD and ODD out of the chassis, see if you can get into BIOS.

If you can do a BIOS reset to put any setting back to factory.

Check the SATA controller menu and change the mode to AHCI for SSD I believe.

Is this chap confident is doing drive swaps, he is not working on carpets etc and given the mainboard a shock by accident ?

He's a very intelligent guy and i've basically held his hand through the process over skype video so I was very careful when laying out the instructions for disassembly.  I'll contact him now with your suggestion.  He's on the third re-installation of windows so I don't feel like it's a corrupted install  but I know for a fact he hasn't changed settings to AHCI.  I'll be back in touch soon.

Thanks

Is there a way to check if he's shocked the board?  I don't think he has but anything is possible.

Okay so we've done all of that.  We did get the bios reset to default and the boot priority fixed however still not waking from sleep or restarting.
