SSD at 100% on startup?

ProjectX01
Go to solution Solved by Grrizz,

Oh you didn't mention it was causing it to hang ;) Yea disabling the page file is a bad idea, you'll note in that list they say to off-load it to a HDD not disable it completely even so its an unnecessary step that was thought up in the early days of SSDs.

I think these days if your windows is up-to-date you shouldn't have to do any optimisations for SSDs as the updates have taken care of that, only back when 32GB drives cost $200 was manual intervention necessary.

i'm running windows update right now. while downloading my bluetooth driver. it seems the HDD is running at 100% most of the time.

If your referring to the task manager readout note the graph is "Active time" not bandwidth capacity/transfer rate (windows wouldn't know what that is as its different on a drive by drive basis) so because you are loading things at start up it makes sense that the SSD would be 100% active.

yes, i was referring to the graph and the percent at which it was running. but now that im monitoring it. after start up it goes waaaaay back down to 0-10%. afterwards when i download updates and the driver for my BT it goes shooting up to 100%. after a few minutes boom. hang. can't even get a screenshot

i feel like it's because i disabled the page filing for my system. imma try to set it back to "auto" mode and see what happens.

Did you upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 possibly?

Disabling the page file is fine as long as you have enough ram. It's actually a good thing and something that I have done since I had 6GB+ of ram. So at least since 2009 if I'm remembering correctly.

really? may I add that i;ve installed like 4 additional HDDs. 2 320's as scratch disk for downloads and media. 2 2TB as storage. it was originally configured as RAID but i changed it to AHCI recently.

also ive reset the page filing to auto. but it seems it still hanged when i did a disk clean up. normal operations are still good. but doing anything while the SSD is in operation seems to make my system hang.

You can run without a page file with enough memory but there are no real tangible benefits, people used to do it back in the day because with a 32GB SSD space was at a premium.

I assumed you were using W7 due to that guide, W8 is optimised for SSDs from the get go so no alterations are necessary. I'm not sure what else might be causing your hangs, what SSD do you have? have you done a drive health check on it? how much spare space is on it?

errrr im actually running 8.1 ahaha. but then i read up on facts about hdds and decided "well, i've gone this far. why not go the extra mile" and so it began.

at anypoint. it seems it working fine now. and at this point im too afraid to ask. hahaha. but really tho. i dunno what happend. a couple of restart's later and voila. it's ok again.

The issue your having with 100% disk activity actually relates to the upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 and was a known problem affecting quite a few users on launch.

And yes disabling the page file when you have enough ram is good. It quickens up the whole responsiveness of your computer.

You just recently reinstalled windows correct? The best action then would be to straight install 8.1 instead of 8.0 and then upgrade to 8.1 as you will not be able to encounter that error. If you would like to try and fix it generally that error is due to drivers that are incompatible with 8.1 and are still being used after the upgrade. you might be able to find out a bit more with a bit of research. From what ive seen though there is no 100% definitive fix for it.

There are tangible benefits to running with no page file. The main one being that windows doesnt throw programs it deems to be idle on disk even though you have more than enough ram free. Basically it improves the responsiveness of your system.

Win 8 is only optimized when it copmes to RAID, TRIM,and defraging. Heck Win7 Sp1 is almost as good if thats all you interested in. This was mainly gained when support for UEFI was added at the OS level. Win8 does do a better job though as it has tighter UEFI integration.

Dont know just read what I wrote above and keep an eye on your disk activity VS what is actually going on like the transfer rate.

In theory it does but in reality it doesn't, there are many tests showing this, with a HDD it makes some difference but with a SSD there really aren't any tangible benefits other then maybe shaving a second off your boot times. I stopped doing it after moving off 32GB SSDs and agree with the tests I've seen, the app "parking" doesn't have the hang that you would see on a HDD.

boot times? I wasnt referring to that at all. Its all about multi-tasking my friend.

That's what I mean, with a SSD any potential benefit for things like multi-tasking and idle apps are gone, the theory of disabling the page file comes from a XP/Vista and pre/early SSD time but things have changed since then.

There still there in7 for sure. Its improved in 8 quite a bit but when you have more than enough ram there are no worries so what not disable.
