i3 or i5?

Guest
Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Here is a review from Eurogamer discussing the bottlenecking with the G3258. They came to the conclusion that a GTX 750Ti was probably the best combination with a heavily overclocked G3258.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-pentium-g3258-review

Here's nanosuit's Watch Dogs CPU simulation video:

-Who let the dogs out? woof woof woof woof-

And his G3258 simulation video:

-I cry everytim-

Thanks, that video helped me a lot, I'll go with the i3 since it saves me some money.

I play games like Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3 and I'm planning to play FC4 and GTA V aswell.

Should I get an i3 and a new motherboard or an older i5 and keep my current mobo (which is shit TBH)

I would actually save and get the new platform next year. I wouldn't buy an "old" platform now.
Next years CPUs are supposed to be more efficient and you will be more "future-proof" that way.

motherboards are not that big of a deal when it comes to pure performance. your cpu is just too slow...

if you want performance now: I would get an "old" 2500 or 3570, or something similar. Both are very good CPUs.

if you can hold out just a little bit (and half a year is not that long): get a mid-range CPU and mobo and be happy for the next years.

You save some money and can upgrade in the future to broadwell or another haswell CPU when there prices drop.

go with a haswell i3 now and get an i5/i7 later if you can't get an i5 now.

I don't get this at all. The best solution is a complete sidegrade to a Haswell i3 platform? Why not just buy an i5-3570 and save the full platform upgrade for when Intel puts something revolutionary out?

Because I don't really like the motherboard I currently have...

Intel CPU's don't go down in price. The i5-3570 is 2 1/2 years old and still sells for $220 in the US. This is a ridiculous idea to buy a lower end CPU now so you can buy a CPU on par with an i5-3570 later, when you could just buy the damn i5-3570 now for the same price.

Because I don't really like the motherboard I currently have...

chances are you won't really like the ones we've suggested either those are all entry level boards and they have nothing very impressive...i missed the part where it was said that you could just upgrade your CPU to an ivy bridge i5...which is what i would recommend in fact.

Look on amazon for the i5-3570 or i5-3470 those should cost you around 200$ US so i would get around 165 euros maybe ? something like that...

EDIT: 160 euros for the i5-3470 new on amazon UK, free shipping:

There's notHing wrong with your mobo, an ivy bridge i5 would fine with that board. You got usb 3 , GB LAN etc. on,y thing is sata Ports.

I ran my 3570k on asrock h61 board, it did just fine- but lacked use 3 and GB LAN.

That CPU is still good and it isn't low-end, it's a great CPU for gamin and general use maybe some light editing.

I don't get the point of spending 100 euro on the CPU to get the same performance. Better to save up the extra 50 euro and go with nanosuit's recommendation to get an i5 if the op truly wants a platform upgrade.
