AudioTechnica M50x vs Sennheiser 598

Just as the topic says, I am considering buying either of these headsets. I can get them both for around the same price and open ear does not make a difference ( I'm in my room most of the time and will not be taking the headset out side much).

The one problem I might have is that I was considering buying a mod mic as well. If I was to buy the Sennheiser's, would the people in my skype calls be able to here themselves or anything that I am listening to?

Thank you.

BTW, I play a lot of pc games and watch a ton of movies.

OH, and if you can Recommend a good Headphone AMP for me to buy, that would be fantastic as well. Somewhere between $50-$100 is my price range.

Thanks.

For gaming and movies, I'd recommend you save your money and get the HD518, they use the same driver as the 2 higher tier models in the 5XX range and sound incredibly similar.

Being open headphones they are suited to gaming and watching of movies because the soundstage can be wider and positional audio can work better, although they are open the leaked sound is quiet. I doubt your friends could hear themselves in your microphone and even if it were an issue you could reduce the gain of the microphone or the volume of your game. (you could always get a desktop mic)

The M50X are very good headphones, but the M40X are cheaper and much better value for money with a close sound similarity.

For either of those headphones, your onboard audio will drive them fine, an amplifier is not required.

My brother uses m50s and I use 558s, both very similar to your potentials. They are very different headphones, the 558/598 providing (imo) a much better listening/gaming experience and longer comfort with (fake)velvet + thick padding being more breathable than pleather + less padding. Also my brother uses a fiio e10 which is great if you want more volume range.

There's no competition: Get the HD 598s. I prefer them even over more expensive headphones like the HD 650s and Beyerdynamics DT 990 Premiums. They have an amazing soundstage and they're the most comfortable headphones ever to grace my skull. The HD 598s also have a brighter sound, wider soundstage, lower clamping force, and more luxurious padding than the HD 558s. The ATH-M50x, meanwhile, is rather uncomfortable with overly shallow earcups and the soundstage sucks plus, for closed-back headphones, they certainly leak a lot.

Also, get the FiiO E10K for your amp/DAC. It's a great combo.

the 6 months I had with my hd598, I could not and many others could not tell the difference between the 598 and my tape modded 558s

but this wasn't done with any scientific method

but I sold them pretty much after my friend Andy put it, you paid $60 more dollars for them to remove tape and color them hipster khaki brown

as for the op

m50s aren't that great especially for any fps shooters, they are great for music but nothing spectacular

I have both, and either is a good choice.

But be aware! You will not be taking the 598's with you on te bus, or outside at all for that matter.

The ATH-M50X's are great for travel. I take them with me when I go to school (by bike).

The Sennheisers have a less apparent amout of base, but they're not lacking (for me).

Also, after a long time of listening, I get tired of the M50X's, but never of the 598's. I think that's because they're open.

If I have to pick one, the I'd definitely pick the HD 598's, not even a bit of doubt,

however, if you want to use them on the go, get the M50X's, simple as that.
