Need Help with Flac

bad23651

Hello! I'm new here and just got some Sennheiser ie80 headphones. I'm looking to maximize the listening experience; been looking around and learned about FLAC? With these headphones I'm noticing the music I've downloaded over the years on my itunes sounds horrid lol.

Just for a bit of info I listen to music through my note 3 and asus g75vw (if that means anything)

Any help for new audio files/how to maximize the awesomeness of these in ears would be appreciated!

Very limited and you mostly have to pay for them. They do make a difference though as they don't compress the audio much (or at all, not sure).

FLAC is free lossless audio codec so it basically isnt compressed. there is a site called tidalhifi.com which is spotify but with flac files. the cheapest way to get FLAC is buy the CD and rip it to your computer.

It is definitely compressed, just losslessly. If you archive a folder with 7z on ultra compression it's still definitely compressed and still lossless. Buying an entire CD and ripping it can be expensive and annoying, I wish all music selling sites sell 1 track in FLAC cheaply.  :(

You're not going to hear a difference between FLAC and a competent MP3 file.

I have some cd's and have ripped them to my comp. They don't sound any different than the mp3 files. Am I missing something?

Keep in mind 110% noob here

That's because FLAC sounds the same as reasonably high bitrate mp3 99.99% of the time.

ok then what am I missing? My phone sounds WAAY better than my pc. I can tell when a good audio file comes on. How can I tell good vs bad? Or are there specific files i should look for?

Just trying to maximize the arm and leg I had to sell to get these things lol

IE80, is that IEM? So, same file, but it sounds better on your phone? You might be getting worse sound from your PC because of the high output impedance from the audio out jack. If you feel up to it, you can try getting the Fiio E6. That should remedy the high output impedance of PC's audio out jack.

yes they are iem

I got thrown a bit when you said IE80 headphone.

Well, if you've tried it with your phone (or any devices for that matter) and it sounded good, then it's good. If only the PC that's making a bad sound, then it's your PC's fault. Could be numerous possibilities. Could be just the output impedance of the jack that's too high, could be an overall bad onboard audio, could be EMI, or even could be just bad contacts on the jacks.

If you got some money to spare, you could go for the $40 Syba DAC. It's basically a stereo audio card, but it's external, and aimed for headphone/headset uses.

Ok I will look into that. As for music files (i assume it makes a difference) anything i should do or know?

It is a gaming pc so I assumed the audio card wouldn't be the greatest for music. My Sony Pulse wireless sound fantastic through usb tho.

First congrats on your purchase. Second, it's pretty important next time to hear reviews after reviews and then even trying them yourself before buying or returning them. By all means linus is probably better than me in recognizing different sound signature but he's a general top 40 listener so he looks "MUH BASS" at times. If you do listen do top 40s and you like the sound of IE80, great. But if you're doing other genres of music i find there are IEMs or even Custom IEMs that might be better than IE80. One example would be SE535

I see no reason to go for any higher than 320 kpbs MP3 files, I don't hear a difference with any of my headphones.

as for the differences in sound between your laptop and phone, try turning off ALL enhancements you find in sound settings.

I'm a bass head at heart but I also listen to rock/metallica etc. These sound great and fit me perfectly. I will look into my computer problem and maybe get a headphone amp; thanks for all the help! I am finding the songs from cd's do sound much better. I will be going that route from now on

Flac is still very much compressed. When working with logic, I cannot tell the difference between a good MP3 and Flac even with some really detailed headphones (SRH 840s). WAV files offer slightly more dynamic range, but again that's dependent on how the music is mixed and mastered. If the music has a lot of compression when mixed and mastered, it'll sound compressed as an MP3 or FLAC.

If the songs not on CD sound bad then wherever you are pirating your tracks screwed something up.

There are FLAC rips or reputable 320kbps mp3 rips for most albums.

Or yeah, buy it legit. Only way to be 10000% sure it's virgin FLAC. I've done it for OCD purposes.

There is a program called Spectro that can check if a FLAC file is legit or converted MP3.

Buy music on Bandcamp.

Doesn't that program not work? All it does is check if the frequency response is cut off at the high frequencies, a 320 LAME without a low-pass filter will pass it easily.

I don't think it's 100%.

And not all artists are on Bandicamp. :(

are your phone and your laptop outputting at the same perceived volume?  It's your built-in laptop audio, correct?

Hey guyes thanks for all the help! I downloaded some higher quality audio files and my comp sounds fine with them. Clear as can be.

They are .flac files; do you guys recommend any EQ? As said earlier I like music a bit bass heavy and the flat frequency isn't doing it for me
