I need more USB 3 ports

orangecat

WHat are my options when it comes to adding more USb ports to my computer? I currently have all my USb ports used up and I'd like more. Also I need a 4 port front USB thing to go next to my optical drive also.

For the front USB I'd like 4 USB 3 and 1 or 2 SD card slots.

If you're willing to get a new Mobo, the new x99s have 10 USB 3.0 ports.

I'd love a new motherboard but I don't have 300$ to drop on a new CPU and board.

I'm just saying, if OP is already planning to upgrade, or will in the future, that's a good option.

Well the bad ones are that cheap. Your probably looking at about $35 minimum for a good USB 3.0 card. The one you have pictured is a 4 port card on a PCI-E x1. PCI-E x1 only has 5GB/s but each USB 3.0 controller (2 ports per controller) needs 5GB/s for full speed. So basically your going to bottleneck if you use the front header and the rear ports at the same time. The ones that have 4 ports properly setup on PCI-E x4 are generally $80-100.

Also that front bay that you pictured is USB 2.0 and 3.0, which is kinda weird.
