Seagate has now started shipping a new ling of High-Capacity, low performance drives that they are calling "Archive HHD's"

What they lack in speed, they make up in size. $260 dollars gets you a 8TB Drive, that's 3 cents per gig!

 

The drive uses new tech, called Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR For short) which lets your store more data on fewer platters at the cost of performance, which is fine for a drive like this.

The technique increases the drive's areal density, which allows Seagate to store 1.33TB on a single platter as opposed to the 1TB used in normal everyday hard drives.

 

What does this mean for the drive? It reduces production cost, Energy consumption, noise, vibration, space - all the bad things you always wanted less of.

The problem with SMR is that it reduces HDD performance considerably, Seagate's drive spin at 5,9 RMP with a 128MB cache and the average read/write of 150MB per second.

 

The drives are currently being shipped to retailers and should be available in January

Inb4 not enough for porn/ anime collection. This is amazing, its mind bending to think that 10 years ago we had 8 GB drives that were considered insane for the price. 10 years from now we'll have Peta-byte drives, 100 Gigbit internet, and CPU's that can replicate the speed of the brain.

Due to countless incidents where Seagate products have failed, I have lost all faith in their products, as they fail on me time and time again.. to the point of not bothering with RMA. So a 8TB drive from them sounds like 260$ straight out the window.

Personal experience. Out of 7 HDD's (where 2 were SSHD's), 7 out of 7 have stopped working, and are now just bricks.. shortest one was this http://i.imgur.com/embRtLG.jpg piece of shit. It only lasted 28 days before it stopped working.

 

At this point, after so many incidents, I've completely lost faith in Seagate.

I'm not saying this to slam them without reason, because I heard something "on the internet", I'm just saying from my personal experience with their products.. I will never again buy their products.

Well I'm glad I've had no issues I think 1 of 20 seagate drives I've owned in the last 14 years has died and it was an external with extensive use. Where I've had 3 of 10 WD drives die (2 cavair blacks and a green) as an Australian RMA is often pointless it costs almost as much to mail a lot of parts back to the manufacturer as it does to just replace them. Waiting to find out if it's worth it with my Kraken X61(pump rattles) or if I'll just toss it and replace it.

Sounds like you have a dodgy PSU or something, that's an awful lot of failures for hard drives let alone for one brand of hard drive.
