TV - 4K or 1080p?

JJLabrier
Go to solution Solved by Epic_Nex,

Really? how would a 4K TV that can't upscale play cable TV? would it be in a smaller window instead of covering the whole screen? coz that would suck ass.

hold on let me rephrase this... Some 4k TVs can turn some resolutions into 4k resolution (or at least better than what it was originally) but not all can. The ones that can not do that, i assume have to be set to a lower resolution, the same as what your watching. So unless your 4k TV can turn that image it is getting into a better one, there is not really a point in a 4k Tv unless you plan on hooking up a computer to it, or like you get (forgot what it is called) and with it you can buy movies in 4k.

So I sold my old DLP TV and I'm thinking of buying a new TV. Should I get a 4K TV or 1080p TV? NOT FOR GAMING by the way.

I don't think cable TV is in 4k yet is it? Is it still worth getting a 4k TV for cable? Will it just upscale the 1080p content? Is up-scaled 1080p on a 4K TV still better than 1080p on native resolution assuming all other factors are even? Should I buy a 4K TV for future proofing? Any other tips?

Thanks in advance for all your answers!

Of course get a 4k one they are not that much more expensive than just 1080 smart tv's.

How big are you looking at, how far away are you planning to sit, and most importantly what content are you hoping to view on this?

I'd get a 4k TV if it was similarly priced to a high-end 1080p TV.

Sure there's not much content at 4k right now, but there will be soon and once there is, you'll be kicking yourself because you can't enjoy the beauty of 4k.

I mentioned in the post that I'm using it for cable TV. I will be sitting about 4 meters away. I want something around 60".

1080p, most cable is at 480p

If it isn't too much apart in price then the 4k, you could use it for so much more than just TV

It depends on the cost difference, a 4k tv will be slightly better, but may cost quite a bit more.

I'm looking for a 60" TV so the cost difference is quite larger. Almost double.

hmm, at that size the price difference is bigger, but the benefit is also much bigger. You need to decide on a budget and get one because we can't decide this type of thing without knowing a lot of personal information.

hmm.. if just watching cable TV, is 4K still better at that size? cable is really all i'm gonna be using it for.

Well I didn't say I couldn't afford the cost difference. I'm just trying to find justification for paying that much.

I think for just standard cable, 1080p will be fine, most stations are 720p or lower so it will be awhile before they take advantage of your 4k tv.

I see! So since I'm not hooking mine up to a computer and there isn't any 4K content besides some youtube videos, I guess it's currently pointless to get a 4K TV then huh?

I recommend the 6950 series from Samsung. I'm using one as a monitor and it's great. It has HDMI 2.0 if that's something you want to take advantage of in the future. It also says it has upscaling and a quad core processor. Make of that what you will.

I think the 55" is going for http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55HU6950-55-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/B00KSBB7US 1300. That's the one I have.

In comparison the 60 Inch 8550 series costs nearly 2700. That's a pricey increase for 3d and 5 inches.

Don't worry about seeing the pixels, my 55inch 1080p TV looks beautiful but that's with my PS4.

480p on a 2160p (16:9) TV won't look that good, but it depends on how the TV upscales lower resolutions

You also said that cable doesn't broadcast in 4K. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt in at least having SOME content for it.

4 metres is a normal living-room distance, and I think at 60" you would see a difference, provided the content was there. I think it would be a shame to get such a thing and not game on it, but whatever.
