X99 Build: Dead Component, PSU, Motherboard, Other?

A_Reed

So I'm playing AC Unity last night and right in the middle of a mission I hear a click and my PC goes dark. I checked the power cord, solid and the same for the power strip into the wall. I immediately turned the power switch off, pulled the case panels off, tuned the master back on and hit the power button on the motherboard. All I get is an audible click from the power supply and the status light that normally comes on at startup and nothing else. At this point I am concerned my PSU is dead.

This morning I pulled up a color code for my 24 pin connector and jumped green to black, with everything else unplugged from the PSU and the fan on the unit started. I then hooked it back up to my motherboard with nothing else receiving power and tried turning it on again, nothing. I fully intend to eliminate the power supply from the equation with a multi-meter later today when I get out of work but my suspicions now point to a faulty motherboard.

After remembering that I recently had to cycle my game controller from my mobo USB ports I figured maybe there is a short in the rear i/o. I pulled all USB cables and my Ethernet connection leaving nothing in my rear i/o, reconnected power and hit the power button. The PSU now kicks on fully and the motherboard seems to start up, although without RAM, CPU power, GPU power (H100i unplugged as well) I wouldn't get very far so I killed power and had to leave for work.

So here I am while everyone else checks their morning email, wondering what component(s) have gone bad? Like I said my suspicion is on the mobo but how how do I systematically go about adding power back to components one at a time to figure out the bad one(s)?

See Sig for machine build.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you ever trying to figure it out by yourself? X99 is relatively new MOBO, so it has warranty. Send it to service. I've heard that X99 had some problems with overheating and burning. It may be the issue here. I'll suggest you to send it to service right away.

To answer your question: Start by plugging the PSU to MOBO. Add CPU and RAM and GPU. In that order. Plug the drives like HDD or SSD last.

try to smell if the PSU smells burning, I had those clicks before and those are the clicks who explained that MY PSU IS dead.

Idk if yours is the same

Udate: I've played with it a little more tonight. I think the CPU socket is dead, I unplug the CPU power and the mobo starts right up. Plug it in, dead. So I assume either the socket is dead or the CPU. Time to apply for some RMAs.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well,I've sent my motherboard in for RMA and received one back in exchange. I hooked up the bare necessities and hit the power. It boots for about three seconds and shuts down. F#$%&@#$#@!

What now, could the CPU be dead and be preventing the mobo from POSTing? Or is it really an issue with the PSU?

Edit:Could the H100i pump be dead and preventing the POST (protecting itself)?

Im going to take a shot and say its your CPU, RMA it and test your new one upon arrival, if that doesn't work then its your PSU. Good luck :)

Rechecked my power supply, jumpered the 24 pin and measured the voltages. All good.I've come to the conclusion that it is my CPU. Especially now that I have a new motherboard from an earlier RMA and I can unplug the CPU power and it at least powers up.
