Logitech G700s review - no pictures(yet)

FunkyFeatures

This is going to be my first review, so bare with me, and give me constructive criticism please.

I will be reviewing the Logitech G700s, my replacement for the G700.

The G700s

The Logitech G700s is a lovely mouse. It is made for righthanded people, so don't try and use it with your left hand, it simply doesn't work, I've tried it.

It is very large, nice for a guy with large hands, but I must point something out. The right mouse button is slightly shorter than the left one, which makes no sense no matter how I grab the mouse. The middle finger is longer than the index finger, so why make it shorter?

My middle finger must be bent for it to actually use the right button, since the button does not go over the edge of the mouse. A little bit of a design flaw I feel like.

It has a thumb support thing to the left, however I find it to be too small to actually use, and if it is not big enough, then it is just in the way. I have to purposely be lifting the thumb and keep it steady to the side, instead of it resting on the surface or on the support. Either it's my grip, or they just designed it poorly.

The buttons

There is a lot of buttons on this badboy. There is behind the scroll wheel on the mouse, which is made for profile switching by default, which I've left it at. Then there is three buttons on the left, right next to the leftclick. The front one is for increasing DPI, the middle one is for decreasing DPI, and the back one is for checking battery. Then you have four thumb buttons, which of two is programmed by default, page back and page forward. They are hard to get used to, but when you get used to them, they are really easy to use, and are very helpful for something like push-to-talk in teamspeak, however I cannot say how they work in a MMORPG, as I havent played any that needed the buttons.

I am simply too lazy to program them, and don't really find the need for them, so I only use one button for push-to-talk, and thats about it.

The scroll wheel

If there is one thing satisfying about this mouse, it definitely isn't the scroll wheel. I feel like it doesn't have enough feedback when scrolling, and when left in free mode, it is just annoying as it never really stops, so you might scroll once a minute where you don't know what is happening. This is also extremely annoying in games, as it changes the gun and you can't do anything when it trolls you like that for thirty minutes until you find out.

However, the free scroll mode is usefull sometimes, as long as you remember to turn it back to "clicky" mode which is also quite loose. Scrolling down lots of pages can take a long time, and I find it very useful sometimes.

The scroll down and up is not the only thing about this mouse, oh no! It has a button itself, the middle mouse button. Very useful for opening links in a new tab, use it all the time.

Also, a very neat feature which should be default by any mice, is that it can scroll to the side. I use that all the time too, and is very useful if you like having tons of windows open, and it can't fit all of the sides on at the same time. Very nice!

The left/right click

This is personal, but I feel like the mouse click is too heavy for shooters. That is how I feel. I always end up moving the mouse a tiny bit while playing counterstrike, which is really annoying. The hand gets exhausted and sore really quickly because it is heavy for me. Sometimes I even have to just quit playing games for the whole day because my hand doesn't feel like doing the heavy clicks so much. I personally don't like it, but I will stick with it, and just get a mouse with lighter clicks next time I'm buying one.

The "performance"

What can I say about performance, It doesn't work on glass, and should mostly be used on a mousepad. I use it on a wooden desk, with a mousepad on the way, sometimes the tracking is off because the wood has slight holes in it, and slightly different colors on different places. I use it with 400dpi.

It is a heavy mouse, you don't loose the grip of it, but sometimes it can be harder to lift the mouse up and put it down without slamming the desk like it behaved badly. I usually avoid to lift it up, since it is very noisy and I don't live alone.

Comparison with G700

The only difference between this mouse and the G700, is the coating and the DPI that goes up slightly higher, there is supposedly an "Anti-sweat" coating on it. I don't know if it works, but I haven't noticed any difference between this one and the G700. The DPI goes up to 8200 on this one, while i believe the G700 "only" went up to around 6000. I don't see the need of anything higher than 2000 though.

Software

With this mouse, you can download Logitech Gaming Software, LGS. At first, I had trouble finding it, but I think they made it easier to find, or I've just gotten better at googling :)

The software allows you to get profiles for games like Battlefield and Counterstrike, but I never use them. I make my own profiles with the buttons and the one DPI I need, and start fragging.

It allows you to create your own profiles, and you can have five different profiles at once. I personally only used one out of the five, but if I started playing more different games needing different buttons, I had the option to program it and simply switch it with the button behind the mouse wheel release. I find it easy to use, but I never use it once I set up the mouse properly.

One thing I will say about these profiles. My onboard memory on the G700 non-s was that it reset itself to profile 2 every time I turned the mouse on. If this happens to you, ask Logitech for a replacement, or RMA it where you bought it. If say Newegg doesn't accept the RMA, Logitech will try to further help you with it.

Support

The support from Logitech was absolutely lovely. I asked them to replace my G700 because of faulty onboard memory, and then they kindly asked me to try where I bought it in the first place.

I live in Denmark, asked for danish support. Logitech was very busy, so they offered me norwegian or english support, I could both languages, but norwegian was easier. I love how they didn't just wait until there was somebody who could danish to recieve my support ticket.

So the guy at Logitech asked me to get the mouse to where I bought it. They unfortunately didn't want to replace it there. I contacted Logitech once more, and they sent a new G700s to me. Very kind of them, definitely something that could convince me to get another mouse from them.

Battery Life

So, the G700s is a wireless mouse with excellent "performance" in my opinion. Though, the battery life is the worst thing about it. It doesn't even go half a day before i need to charge it, hell I already charged it once today while writing this review. Very bad battery, and I charge it whenever I can, at night, when I go for lunch, just whenever I am not using it, even while writing the review. I would say it goes about 3-4 gaming hours before it dies, or 4-5 browsing hours before it starts asking for juice.

However, it charges quite quickly, in just 30 minutes I find it charges 2/3 or 3/3 bars, depending on how low it got.

Conclusion

I will be doing the conclusions in Pros, Cons, and Mediocre.

Pros:

  • Is large, good for large hands
  • Is right-handed, comfortable for righthanded, do not use with left hand.
  • Has a lot of buttons
  • Goes up to a very high DPI, as well as a low.
  • Great support
  • Great software
  • Middle mouse button and left/right wheel clicks

Cons:

  • Very bad battery
  • Heavy clicks
  • Poorly designed left/right click IMO
  • Mouse wheel not satisfying, sometimes scrolls randomly if not locked
  • Poor thumb rest

Mediocre:

  • Is only for righthanded, and lefthanded people can't use it properly if at all
  • You pay for more, but don't get more unless you like crazy high sensitivities, get the G700 if you don't need higher sensitivities

That about wraps up my review of the G700s, please let me know what I could have done differently, or let me know what you would like to know about the G700s that I didn't mention in the review

I had a G700 mouse until it developed phantom clicks where the mouse would just click by itself without me pressing on the buttons. I went online to find a fix and they say it's because of the gold contact inside the switch had lost its shape and to use a screw driver to reshape it back, so I did just that. Now the phantom click is gone, but the button has no tactile back as it's always in a depressed state.  My warranty ran out, so I went and got myself a G502.

I have a G700s, G502, and a Steelseries Rival (It's a problem, I know), and of the three, I almost prefer the steelseries. It fits my hand the best, the clicks are satisfying, and, as dumb as it is, the LED being RGB is really nice. That said, my daily use mouse is the G502. It's a little small for me, but I really like the click feel and the tracking performance is a little better than the steelseries as well. Also, I've been spoiled by the "hyperscrolling" on logitech mice, and it's hard for me to do without it at this point.

Yupp, agree about the scroll wheel. Have to leave it in locked "clicky" position.

As well it is constantly plugged in. Rarely use it wireless and then it only lasts a couple of hours.

I thought the comment about the heavy left/right clicks was interesting, because on mine I've been accidentally right clicking ever since I bought the thing. It's too light for me!

And yes the low battery life is so true. That's what the G602 is meant to fix.

The G700s was amazing, but unless Logitech puts out a G702 or something to replace it, I'll probably be getting a G502 next.

Git Gud.

Yea, just noticed that on days im very sensitive with the hands, example if i've been soldering, the clicks can feel heavy.

The g602 fixed the battery and the left right click length, not the weight og the clicks though.

The clicks go over the end of the mouse, which honestly it should be with any "gaming" branded mouse.

The "axle(?)" that holds my G700s scroll wheel broke off playing BF4 one day, Logitech refuses to fix it.

That seems weird, they were very friendly when replacing mine.

Might be something about physical damage, that you can't prove was not on purpose, did they tell you? Also if you could do small quotes or make a "spoiler" thing in the forum. Might be the way you described it. Also, how old is it? Make sure to provide video evidence of how it disfunctions, and or picture

I really like my G700, buy some high quality eneloop batteries and get a wall charger for them. I just swap the battery out when it runs out and only charge the batteries with the wall wart, each battery lasts around 6 hours for me.

I have a G700s and I can agree with the battery life, it is just way too short, maybe Logitech could consider using a custom lithium ion battery or something, instead of using a standard rechargeable AA battery. Other than that I really have nothing else bad to say about the mouse.

  • 4 months later...

Update:

The G700s now has the same damn (minne? think it meant memory) memory issue. I now either 1 - have to have my most used profile set to the first profile, or change it all the time after I turn my mouse on/off. A damn shame, don't think I will bother RMA'ing it though, been looking for a lighter mouse, most likely razer deathadder.

I am very sad to see another Logitech mouse to slightly disappoint me, Logitechs are not forever, just like diamonds :P

Still not a bad product, just having two fail with their memory, quite unlucky, don't let this make you NOT buy their products. They are still awesome :D

Edit: seems like some people on the internet may think that the software is the issue.. well, let's try it out?

Edit 2: makes no difference =( I will still keep it though! Has been one awesome mouse, and is still alive and working... well, working except for the memory issue
