Linux or Windows

Hello, I just built my first computer recently, but I don't have an OS for it yet; I was planning just to install Linux, but I didn't realize how many different versions of the Linux OS there was. So I was wondering should I continue with trying to find a Linux OS or just get Windows instead.

Also if you do believe I should go with Linux could I still runs Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Sweep, Steam, ect. on it or is there for only Windows/OS X. What I love to do on my PC is not only game, but also to Create some Indie Games, use a digital arts program with stylist, and Adobe Photoshop/Illistrator. If it can still, what Linux OS would you recomend?

This is what I've built to get a sense what I should do.

If you really want a free OS, go with Linux Mint. If you can't get those exact programs there are generally other programs that do the same thing. But most games are Linux compatible. I recommend Windows however.

i will have to recommend windows :( sadly. you need adobe products and they arent available fully on linux. also many more games on steam are for windows than for linux. if all you did was programming in a non microsoft language, then i would totally recommend linux. but you have other needs, so windows

I'd love to use a Linux distro as my main machine, but Windows is just better from a compatibility and software standpoint.  Not to mention that most of the games in my Steam library are Windows only.

Get a Gigabyte Motherboard (better compatibility) like:  Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H and dualboot Mac OS X (creativity) and Windows (gaming).

I have a dualboot system myself. I like Mac OS X better for Adobe software which you are using too.

I don't want to start a Mac vs Windows topic. I just tried to find the right balance between the two. I personally don't like 1 OS or 1 User for gaming and creativity. It's just a total mess.

btw: If you decide to dualboot Mac OS X and Windows this site will help you a lot: http://www.tonymacx86.com/home.php

And one tip: get seperate SSD's/HDD's for both OSes.

Linux looks the most interesting to me in a streaming setup. Windows on main desktop that does the hard work. Linux (Steam OS) on a small, low power pc connected to your tv or something.

Gaming rig: CASE: Bitfenix Prodigy White CPU: I7 4770k @ 4.6 Ghz MOBO: Gigabyte Z87N-WIFI RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 16GB LP Graphics CardASUS GTX 780 OC'D 1146/1832 PSU: Corsair HX650 SSD: Samsung Series 840 250GB MONITOR: ASUS VK248H (real bad, needs an upgrade VERY soon)

So you create indie games but you did not know there where different Linux flavors?

Better use Windows then.

You will have no luck getting Creative Cloud to run on any Linux distro. Same goes for Office. Although, good alternatives for office exist for Linux. My favorite is LibreOffice. However, nothing comes close to the power of Adobe CC on Linux. Steam is available for Linux, however, the selection of games is rather limited. If you want to use Steam, I recommend Debian. If you want to do anything else other than Steam, I personally like Fedora.

I think that that shows how the word indie is used lately. Only because something is an indie game does not mean at all that it is the next big thing.

Might be some guy in a basement not knowing anything about computers :P

EDIT: Or a girl :)

I find Linux a lot easier to use than Windows because of BASH scripting, but there is a learning curve to Linux. It's best early on to dual boot with Windows so you can spend some time getting used to Linux without making a major commitment to it. Spend a year with it and if you really like it, then you can cut the Windows cord. And maybe there will be some decent gaming support by then; Linux has already come a long ways for gaming the last couple of years, and hopefully SteamOS can close the deal and eventually divorce shitty Windows from PC gaming.

If you ask a question like this you should probably install Windows, Linux is for advanced user in my opinion. But then again, Linux is free unlike Windows that costs quite a lot :)
