Windows 8.1 Pro Run as admin

Archangel1994
Go to solution Solved by ologiic,

I'm not referring to UAC. CMD was not run in admin automatically because powercfg.exe /hibernate off gave an error saying that I did not have the required privileges

Gotcha, try this http://www.vmwareandme.com/2013/12/guide-windows-81-always-run-given.html#.VHinK8nYhn0

Hello good folk of the LTT community!

So I just formatted my laptop and went from windows 7 to 8.1 and this time I would like to do what I could not find in windows 7 or 8.1: How do I default ALL programs to run as admin without having to modify each shortcut individually?

They should all run as admin if you're using an administrator account.

That's the point though, there is only one account on this laptop and it is admin yet I must still right-click and "run as administrator"

There is no reason to if your account is a local administrator.

If you are referring to receiving a popup asking if you want to install or modify a program that is UAC "User Access Control". The notification can be disabled by searching UAC and turning the notifications off.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think it is currently and safely possible in windows 8/8.1. I have seen a few different ways people have gotten it to work with registry edits, but they also report that it breaks functionality all over windows when they do. The best and only way I have really seen it is to disable UAC and then modify each shortcut to 'Always run as Admin'.

Also set-ItemProperty says "set-ItemProperty" is not recognized as an internal or external command

it's not telling you to navigate there. Right click your start button and search for "Powershell" then run that.

Honest question... What exactly are you doing on your computer that so frequently requires elevation as to make it worthwhile to do this? I've been a systems administrator for years and before that I was helpdesk... I almost never find myself needing to right-click -> run as administrator. I do so maybe once a month at most.

Running everything as admin all the time is a bit like running all commands in Linux as root... Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
