Cable adapter

jayctech

I'm looking to connect my old GC to the spare VGA port on my monitor (because the console loads up straight into the game...) because smash.

The GC outputs into a red/yellow/white cable, is it possible to just use an adapter? All I know is they both use analogue signals so to me it seems like it should.

By GC I presume you mean GameCube? If so then yes that's fine, I did it all the time.

I presume you mean composite video with left/right audio like this:

Composite-cables.jpg

You can pick up a composite to VGA adapter which should work for the video, but you will need to plug the left/right audio into some speakers.

Hope this helps :)

Ah right thanks. What color cable is it that carries video?

It's going to look bad, maybe even lag. You'd need to mod a component cable to get a good signal, and those cables are rare and expensive because there's a chip on one end that nobody makes anymore. You could get a Wii for cheap. They're backwards compatible and are VGA ready.

I agree with this, composite to VGA is not a very good solution. Composite doesn't have much bandwidth and only supports resolutions up to 480i. It might lag (although I haven't heard of this yet) but the quality won't be great with the interpolation.

The yellow RCA jack carries video, the red carries right audio and the white carries left audio. This isn't the best solution, 480i can look bad with interpolation on large LCDs. The optimal way to connect it is through a SCART port, but I presume this isn't an option for you right now, do you have any other options for connecting it to a display?

Ty I may go for that then. I already have  a wii - reason I wanted to use my older GC is just cause I'd have to have the Wii mote (which needs to not have dead batteries) in order to actually get into the game before I can use the GC controller to play the game.
