Windows 10 Tech preview as main OS?

cheekboys

I was going to install the W10 Tech preview onto my main PC. Is this a good idea? Is it stable enough to be my main OS?

Ok, is it possible to upgrade from W7 64 bit to the W10 preview without having to reinstall everything?

no, you lose programs, but keep personal files.

I'd not recommend it, You're going to need to downgrade before the tech preview stops as you'll not be able to use it after the tech preview ends and you'll loose your stuff.

Would you recommend upgrading to Windows 8.1 right now or wait until 10 comes out next year?

Dual boot Windows 7 and Windows 10 Technical Preview may be a better idea.

Is there any truth to that rumor? I have heard that in a few places.

I say get Windows 8.1. I haven't used Windows 10 in a couple weeks but the last time I did, well, it wasn't quite cleaned up enough to the point where i wasn't frustrated with it.

Action Center was my main issue BTW.

Been using it for a couple of months as my main OS on an SSD. Has been fine for me and a small but welcome improvement over Windows 7.

The gaming has been great too and haven't had any problems using the R9 290 with beta drivers (which are meant for windows 8).

Having said that any critical data I do back up to a different drive.

And if my boot drive crashes I will not blame Microsoft, because I have gotten into this understanding the terms...

So, when the preview expires do I have to revert back to Windows 7? Or will there be another beta out by April?

Windows 10 is already listed on Newegg. So I imagine pre-orders will be coming sooner or later. I would just wait it out as there's no reason in moving from a stable release operating system to one that's essentially still in Alpha.

I think what I am going to do is dual boot W7 and W10.

You could always install it in VirtualBox if you just want to give it a try and want to toy with it a bit. Personally the negatives outweigh the pros of running it as a primary OS.
