Hunting for a new laptop

Stryke

Hey there! This will be a long-winded post so I apologize in advance.

First things first, it's important that you know how I got here. I was the unhappy owner of a Samsung NP355V5C until very recently. On paper, it looked great for it's $500 price tag but I quickly discovered the thing was a shiny, plastic piece of ****.

For this reason, I have decided I want to purchase a laptop that is made of decent quality parts. The manufacturers I've been told to look at are MSI, Asus and Lenovo. I'm open to suggestions of course.

This laptop will be used for gaming and I live in Canada.

Price Range: Would like to keep it under $800 (including taxes/shipping). The lower the better of course.

Screen: 15.6 inch screen (720p). If I have to, I'll drop to 14 inches (The Lenovo Y40 looks fine) but I'd prefer the larger screen. That being said, I've found that laptops with screens larger than 15 inches have a much higher price tag for a feature I don't need or want.

Storage: The hard drive is irrelevant. As soon as it arrives that thing is getting a WD Black drive popped into it. I don't want an SSD.

Usage: This laptop will be used for gaming. It doesn't need to look that pretty but I'm really leaning towards something with a discrete graphics card.

Memory: I want at least 6 gigs of RAM. If there's less than that, it needs to be able to accept the two 4 gig sticks left over from my Samsung.

Battery & Weight: Battery life and weight are not very important.

I'd appreciate any help you could all give and I'll definitely take advantage of black friday/cyber monday if possible.

Well then I obviously won't be getting a 850M... It's a compromise I'm willing to make. Thank you for help anyhow :)

Y40 is def. a good choice. That Acer has nice graphics, but is that processor speed gonna be good enough? (I don't know if there is any noticeable difference)

Personally, I recommend a Lenovo Z40 as a good all around laptop... but it only has an 820M.

From a similar topic that I replied to: (I crossed out the stuff not relevant to this post)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152646

CPU: Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.50 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 840M (2GB memory)
RAM: 8GB DDR3L 1600 MHz
Display: 15.6" (Full HD 1920x1080)
Camera/Mic: 720p webcam [couldn't find mention of mic]
Storage: 1TB 7200RPM
Memory Card Reader: SD
OS: MAC OS X... jk - Windows 8.1 Multi-language 64-Bit

One thing that may be a deal-breaker is it's weight, almost 6 pounds. Otherwise, this satisfies all your wants at a price of $789.99 USD. Check the link...

EDIT: Apparently, it's unavailable in UK... "Out of Stock" (http://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152646) ...check later?

Alternatives: Lenovo Z50 (much cheaper, but only has 820M at max)

Obviously, Y50 is still a valid choice.

Should have specified Canadian dollars, my bad. I appreciate your help though.

How does the 820M stack up against integrated cards?

Sorry about that.

On the topic of the 820M, what games will you be playing? I recommend you check out: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-820M.108477.0.html and check the "Game Benchmarks". I'm not a serious gamer, so I can't really tell you much xD
