When will 1080p be outdate?

Tomby

Is it worth buying a 1080p monitor anymore or will it be phased out soon so it's better just investing in at least a 1440p?

1080p is still a good standard. Most people wouldn't need more.

1080p is and will continue to be the standard for years. The next standard is looking to be 4k. 1440p is mostly only present in the enthusiast world.

Seeing as most, if not all, programs still support down to 800x600 or at least 1024x(whatever that was), i really dont believe 1080p will be "phased out" any time soon.

Right now its fps vs looks, you cant have both.

4k 30-60fps vs 1080p 60-144+fps (I pick 1080p any day)

but when you can get 144+ fps in any game you play at 4k then 1080p is outdated but not before that.

I would say for quite some time but you never know what the next lithography of gpu's have in store. The only indicator is how powerful graphics cards get. If buying a high end gpu means 4k 60fps easy without sli then that is when it will become a standard. But that's several gens away at least.

1080p will continue to be mainstream until GPU hardware has advanced so much that 1080p max settings with even some AA to fit as well is possible on one or both of the following:

  • $60 and under home theatre GPUs
  • Integrated graphics chips in CPUs

Ofcourse, the higher resolution monitors will be available and in excess before that point is met. that's what happened to 720p, almost anything can run 720p and max it out if it's been made within the last 2 years, 720p with minimum graphic settings if its been made within the last 4 years

System: Intel Core i3 3240 @ 3.4GHz, EVGA GTX 960 SSC 2GB ACX 2.0, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Kingston HyperX RAM, ASRock B75M-DGS R2.0 Motherboard, Corsair CX430 W Power Supply
