How strict are your parents with free time?

asim1999

Luckily my parents are not that strict. I am happy that they let me build a gaming PC as i use it for work and play, and they use it once in a while as it is the only good computer we have it the house. A PS4/XB1 would be a no-no at the moment as i am in the last year of GCSEs.

My parents let me do what i want as i am usually busy with work and dont give me strict timings (except for when revising for big tests) and let me do what i want, generally as i am ok with time management

So how strict are your parents in this regard, do they give you strict rules, for example: turn off the internet, give you curfews, and stop you from using the computer for a certain period of time.

the replies are much appreciated

thanks

They're never strict in terms of the time I spend on my PC, because it's (usually) productive.

However, times when I need to sleep get a bit worse... I have to sleep pretty early.

When I was younger, I never really spent stupid long hours on a computer or gaming unless I was with friends, so I never really got complaints.

I think my mother understood my profession would one day be computer related anyway.

I did suffer from "just one more episode" syndrome with anime  sometimes though, and I still do every now and then, leaving me really tired.

When I was younger, as long as I kept my grades up and took care of my chores, my folks didn't really care what I did in my spare time (within reason, of course).

I see a lot of strictness about grades and chore and whatnot. I guess this is the higher achieving crowd, and that stuff usually starts at the parents. My parents pushed me that way when I was really young, but when I was older I did pretty decent for myself on my own accord.

A lot of people I knew just gamed all day or stuff like that. I knew a redneck crowd, and well I was one of them. Not many people knew I was really into tech stuff and already had some certifications in high school.

I guess I just didn't really know anybody with strict parents. Most of the people I knew (including myself) were mostly poor, and hate to say it, that crowd tends to...push their kids for success less. Most I know didn't go to college.

I can't say the reason I'm different is much parenting, I just was the odd one out that really like computers and had always enjoyed reading and learning. Most people I knew in school were always surprised to find out I even knew how to use a  computer. I didn't really have a ....geeky...upbringing and I didn't look the part of a guy that had any drive, let alone had a brain.

What I'm saying is the pattern seems to be that those that are into computers (generally a smarter and well achieving crowd) were raised to be well educated, and I think it proves that parenting has a lot to do with someones success and what they are into. I'm not saying console gamers are not well raised...but maybe I am.

Not many people get into computers by chance like I did.

I don't live with my parents, so they never complain.

Even when I did live with them, they just let me do what I wanted. I was my life and my choices.

If I chose to stay out late, I payed for it the next day etc.

Trying to appear sober after taking MDMA and having a one man party with your free time is quite the challenge.

Never again.

Not. Like at all.

My dad when he was alive used to give criticism and my mom still does though not to the same degree.

Otherwise I could be pcing for days and they wouldn't care.

Well, I have a lot of free time but whenever my mom wants something to happen it always has to happen immediately. So it's very fragmented. I really shouldn't get into MMORPG's.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

My parents had a hands off approach. They let me know I should get my work done, but I could do whatever I want. You know why?

Cause life doesn't give a fuck how important finishing that last mission or last episode or last edited photo is (unless thats your job). Life will hit you hard enough if you aren't good at managing your time. Life will bitch slap you soon enough if you don't have good management skills.

I have a 50 hour a week job at a research institution, I spend 3 hours a week on hockey and probably a dozen or so truly free hours a week. I spend that playing games, working on my photography, or whatever. Sometimes its all photography. Sometimes its all games. I make that choice knowing what my plate has on it.

So trust me when I say this, when your parents don't say anything to you it isn't because they don't care. They're trying to get you to get to that point of caring on your own. They are your parents. They kinda know better for the most part. Turning 18 isn't the "hooray I'm an adult" phase either. You're still a kid, likely a moron who thinks they've got life figured out. You likely don't.

Topics like this come along a lot here, and with the demographics of this site it isn't surprising that users think they are better off without their parents "nagging" at them. "Nagging" is what you like to think, but once you get older and get some brains you realize they were really just trying to raise you the best way possible.
