Another Solid State or Mechanical (christmas thoughts)?

dlf

I know it's about a month away but . . . . Anyway, between a new (higher capacity?) SSD or a new mechanical drive what should I 'wish' for Christmas?

Current specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Sandisk Extreme 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Video Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF X ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer  (x2 of these)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Full (64-bit)
Monitor: LG 22MP55HQ-P 60Hz 22.0" Monitor
Monitor: Acer x223w 22" Monitor
Keyboard: Microsoft SIDEWINDER X4 Wired Gaming Keyboard

  • If I got a new SSD, I could probably put a few of my steam games on my current SSD (in red) like Skyrim, or something else (See: http://steamcommunity.com/id/DlfC/games/?tab=all, for a full list of my steam games list), less load time(s).
  • If I get a new mechanical, I could move all my games (steam, gog, retail discs) off of my 2 TB and onto the new drive.
  • - New mechanical drive should be at least 2+ TB.
  • I don't need a new: CPU, GPU, PSU, OS, Monitor, case, or keyboard yet. I'd probably like more RAM, but with prices of DDR3 as they are . . . . . .

bump . . . I am serious, should I ask for a new SSD (in which case: Brand, size, (m)SATA, etc) or a 2+ TB mechanical drive to put my (digital) & (retail) games on.

Hey dlf,

Gaming relies on storage only for their loading times (both initial and in-game). FPS and graphics are not affected at all. Only a few games need to load huge texture files while in-game. What games are you planning on playing with it?
I would suggest getting a bigger HDD in order to have more space for your games and media. You already have your SSD for your more demanding games and programs. IMHO a HDD would be the better option. :)
