Best 980?

MarylandNerd

I am looking to buy a 980 and I want the best one I was looking at the Gigabyte one because my Gigabyte 680 has done me so well but when I read the reviews on Amazon it turns me off a lot.  I don't manually overclock my cards, I have a medium tower " Cooler Master Storm Scout 2" I can remove my hard drive cage to make the card fit but its not ideal, I have a 800 watt PSU a I5 3570k and 16 gbs of Ram ( Just put info in in case you need it or something ) Thank You A Lot!

the ASUS strix is ugly as hell but very quiet

the gigabytes overclock like crazy but are loud and long as skis

¸MSI is balanced between noise and performance but won't come with a backplate

EVGA fans are cheap and loud and the cooler is not adequalty mounted to the card.

make your  pick :P

BTW they are very similar when i say one is more focused toward performance the difference is barely noticeable same goes for noise etc...they are all similar i'd avoid EVGA i would prefer the MSI or stix for dual fans of better quality (quieter cards)

Are you talking about the G1 gaming one or the strictly windforce one. I have a G1 gaming and its great. The 980 is such a beast that it just comes down to whichever one you think looks better visually.

Wrong. The ACX 2.0 cooler is fine on the 980. The 970 had issues which are fixed now i believe.

The 970 FTW uses that same cooler. Just in case people start asking questions again.

If you are not interested in overclocking, would the Gigabyte still be a good choice, or would it just make insane noise?

Also, can you get a reference card version somewhere?

Well... if you aren't OCing manually, I actually suggest going for the Zotac AMP! The card has literally 0 OC potential. They don't allow anyone to OC, no matter what you do. But they have the highest "factory clock" out there.

Ofc, you could pick ANY other model of the 980 and OC higher than the Zotac AMP! while costing MUCH less. But since you don't want to manually OC... the "best" is the Zotac AMP!

That makes it sound as if OCing is mandatory to get any desired performance out of a GPU these days ...

That's not it. OCing is a function available in almost every card. With it, you can match other model's specs and performance. And by using it, you will get better performance while paying MUCH less.

However, if OP does not wish to make use of such feature, we have to point out this out. He will waste money based on his restrictions, but if he still holds his opinion, the "best option" is presented regardless.
