Should I upgrade to a quad-core AMD from dual core intel?

My cpu is i3 2100, used casually for browsing, watching movies and some gaming. Not exactly a heavy gamer but i'm thinking i will not be able to play new upcoming games due to my limited processor.

Now I have a very tight budget so initially I thought of just reusing my cpu and buy a better gpu, but seeing that newer games started to take advantage of multiple cores, I'm thinking of switching to cheaper amd quad core cpu. Like say, the a8 6600k. Is it worth it? Or I'm better off sticking to my i3 until I can afford an i5?

I3 2100

Foxconn h61mxv (im replacing this as it's lan port is already busted)

Ovation blaze matx case with 600 watt psu

gpu was biostar gt 430 but it's now busted, i'm practically using built-in graphics. Not playable.

Elixir 2 gb ram

320 gb WD HDD*

Lite-on ODD*

*what i plan to retain.

I can save a lot if i retain my chassis and psu. Should I?

Looks very good, good gpu and big ram as well.

Thanks for the tip. I would just need to do some dusting with the case before i put the new components in. Yeah I already have windows.

i personily think that saveing up for a LGA1155 i5 CPU will be your best bet as it will cost you as much or even more to replace the motherboard and CPU to go with AMD than to just get a i5 as the i5-3570k will be a good upgrade with nothing besides the CPU haveing to be changed. The CPU will go from a dual core hyper threaded to a faster quad core w/o hyperthreading though both are going to be at the Intel "end-of-life" status.
If you are looking at AMD for a newer generation CPU / motherboard combo i suggest waiting until 2nd quarter of next year when the new CPUs come out from Intel and pick up a cheap one of those or a cheap one of the current generation of now then upgrade later as the braodwell CPUs and the CPU of now are going to use the same socket thankfully.
still a simple upgrade to the i5-3570k will speed up your little machine alot.

Or since you're using Sandy Bridge, you could get a i5-2500K, as this beast gives some MAD OVERCLOCKS.

Also, I would recommend getting an SSD...

kompooterz.
